March 2012 OAP jailed for 12 years over rape three decades ago PENSIONER Owen Worrall has been jailed for 12 years after he raped a young girl and forced her into sexual activity with other men more than 30 years ago. The 74-year-old encouraged the complainant to watch him having sex with his partner and made her look at pornographic material, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Prosecutor Tariq Shaqoor said Worrall took pictures of his victim wearing stockings and suspenders. And when she was aged between 10 and 13 he encouraged the youngster to indecently assault his partner. Mr Shaqoor said Worrall then started to introduce the victim to other men including a convicted sex offender. Pictures were taken of her and sexual activity would take place between the men and her. Mr Shaqoor said that indecent acts would take place in her presence and she would be indecently assaulted. He said: “Ultimately, the defendant began to have sexual intercourse with her against her will. “He would not use contraception,” added the prosecutor. The court heard Worrall was in his mid to late 40s when he raped the complainant. The victim only felt able to report the abuse decades later and Worrall was arrested in September 2010. He answered no comment to all questions put to him in his police interview. Worrall, of Heath Road, Congleton, pleaded guilty to indecency with a child, indecent assault, and two specimen charges of rape. Trevor Meegan, mitigating, said Worrall, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to the offences to spare the complainant the ordeal of having to give evidence in a trial. “He will face a lonely old age and may even die in prison. That is the blunt truth and fact,” said Mr Meegan. Judge Robert Trevor-Jones said although Worrall pleaded guilty at the last minute, he would receive significant credit as the complainant did not have the ordeal and humiliation of having to relive her experiences in a courtroom. But the judge said it was ‘persistent and repeated abuse over a number of years’. “You groomed and corrupted her,” said Judge Trevor-Jones. “You used her as some form of sex object for your direct and indirect gratification. “Even more sordid was the times you would take her to the homes of other men so they and you could indecently assault her, after she had to dress in provocative clothing. “It is quite clear she was traumatised. “This is something she suppressed for a long period of time. “This was an abhorrent period of abuse of someone at the most potentially influenced period of her life.” Worrall will be released after serving half the sentence with the rest on licence. He will be on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and he was also formally disqualified from working with children.
