OLIVER COOPER SENTENCED FOR VIOLENT RAPE ON RAMSGATE BEACH IN MARGATE
In February 2018, Oliver Cooper, a young man from Margate, was convicted and subsequently sentenced to eight years in a young offender’s institution following a brutal and disturbing assault on a girl at Ramsgate beach. The incident shocked the local community and drew significant attention from law enforcement and the courts.According to court proceedings, Cooper, aged 20 and residing on St Michael’s Avenue in Margate, targeted his victim in a secluded area of Ramsgate beach. Despite her desperate pleas for him to stop, Cooper ignored her cries and continued his assault. The court heard that during the attack, he physically restrained her by placing his hand around her throat, effectively silencing her and preventing her from calling for help.
The case revealed disturbing details about Cooper’s mindset and intentions. Recorder Stuart Trimmer QC, presiding over the case at Canterbury Crown Court, disclosed that police investigations uncovered that in the days leading up to the assault, Cooper had been viewing online content related to forced sexual acts. The judge remarked that Cooper’s actions and online interests indicated a disturbing fixation, and he was driven by a desire for sex outside of consensual boundaries, regardless of the victim’s protests.
The victim, described as a brave young girl, was visibly frightened during the attack. She pleaded with Cooper to cease his assault, but he responded with threats, telling her he would rape her if she did not comply with his demands. After the assault, Cooper left her alone on the isolated beach, having shown no remorse. He then called a taxi and departed the scene, fully aware that he had committed a serious criminal offence.
Further details emerged during the trial, including Cooper’s subsequent interactions on Facebook. He was confronted online and offered what was described as a “kind of apology,” but only after discovering that his victim had confided in others. The court heard that Cooper chose to lie during the trial, causing his victim to relive her traumatic experience. He falsely accused her of not telling the truth, attempting to deny his guilt.
Judge Trimmer emphasized the severity of Cooper’s actions and character. He acknowledged the victim’s bravery and resilience, noting her tears and pleas during the attack. The judge also pointed out Cooper’s physical strength, athletic background, and arrogance, which contributed to the impact of the crime. The court described the victim’s suffering as significant and highlighted the importance of justice.
While Cooper was convicted of the primary charge of rape, he was found not guilty of three other counts, including two involving a second alleged victim. Nonetheless, his conviction and sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent sexual assault and the importance of justice for victims in Margate and beyond.
