NYASHA KURI ATTACKS EX-GIRLFRIEND IN PERTH - COURT HEARS OF VIOLENCE AND ONLOOKER RETRIBUTION
In a disturbing incident that unfolded in the early hours of January 27 this year, Nyasha Kuri, a 25-year-old man from Perth, arrived uninvited at the residence of his former partner, leading to a violent confrontation that drew the attention of nearby witnesses. The Perth Sheriff Court was told that the woman, who had been out with friends and returned to her city centre home shortly after midnight, was startled when Kuri showed up at her doorstep around 5am, visibly agitated and shouting.According to prosecutor Lissie Cook, Kuri’s behavior escalated quickly. She recounted that the accused reached out and physically grabbed the woman by the throat, forcefully pinning her against a wall. Ms. Cook detailed that Kuri squeezed her neck with enough force to cause her distress, and although she did not lose consciousness, she remembered being on the floor during the assault.
Following the attack, the woman managed to retreat inside her home. When police arrived at the scene, she appeared visibly shaken and was hiding behind a sofa. She told officers that Kuri had “throttled” her, confirming the assault. Witnesses and bystanders who had gathered during the incident intervened, which resulted in Kuri sustaining injuries, including a swollen eye.
Nyasha Kuri, who works in customer service, pleaded guilty to the charge of assault. His defence solicitor, Bethany Downham, explained that her client had been out drinking and was intoxicated at the time of the incident. She acknowledged that others had become involved and that Kuri was injured during the altercation, emphasizing that her client made no attempt to excuse or minimize his actions.
During the court hearing, Sheriff Alison McKay addressed Kuri directly, condemning his behavior as “completely unacceptable.” She acknowledged that the intervention of bystanders was understandable given the circumstances and noted that Kuri had no legitimate reason to be at his ex-girlfriend’s property at that hour. The sheriff also ordered Kuri to pay a fine of £750 and imposed a one-year non-harassment order, requiring him to stay away from his former partner to prevent further incidents.
