NIGEL SMITH FROM SOUTHAMPTON SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND RAPE
In a case that has shocked the local community, Nigel Smith, a man known for his devout religious beliefs and active participation in church activities, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses against a young child. The crimes, which spanned several years, involved multiple instances of sexual assault and rape, beginning when the victim was only around five years old.
Smith, who resides on Bitterne Road East in Southampton, was described by probation officers as a “control freak,” a characterization that underscores his manipulative and domineering behavior.
Court proceedings revealed that Smith’s abuse was often carried out through violence and intimidation, with the victim subjected to repeated molestation and sexual assault over an extended period.
It was also disclosed that during church services at the Romsey Christian Centre, Smith would sit the young child on his lap, exploiting the setting for his own sexual gratification.
Despite the overwhelming evidence and the court’s findings, Smith maintained his innocence throughout the trial.
He insisted that he did not intend to cause harm to the child, who, according to court reports, is now battling suicidal thoughts as a consequence of the trauma inflicted upon her.
Smith’s refusal to accept responsibility was noted by the judge, who emphasized his lack of remorse during sentencing.
During a six-day trial at Southampton Crown Court, Smith was convicted on multiple counts, including four charges of rape, sexual assault, cruelty to a child, and an attempt to pervert the course of justice.
Prosecutor Rufus Taylor detailed that the first incident occurred when the victim was between five and six years old, marking the beginning of a series of abusive acts that caused significant psychological damage.
Judge Nicholas Rowland, presiding over the case, condemned Smith’s actions and attitude.
He highlighted the absence of remorse and the profound impact on the victim, stating, “What is apparent to me is the impact this has had on your victim.
You’ve no appreciation for what you did nor any remorse.” The judge also described Smith as a “bully,” emphasizing the violent and controlling nature of his conduct.
In light of the severity of the crimes, Judge Rowland sentenced Nigel Smith to a total of 15 years in prison.
The sentence includes concurrent terms for the multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, cruelty to a child, and the attempt to pervert the course of justice, reflecting the gravity of his offenses and the court’s condemnation of his actions.
