NEIL OWEN FROM YEOVIL ESCAPES PRISON AFTER CHILD SEX OFFENCE SCANDAL IN TAUNTON

In a case that has shocked the local community, Neil Francis Owen, a 73-year-old resident of Greatmead, Yeovil, was brought before Taunton Crown Court to face serious allegations related to child sexual offences.

Owen, a former police officer, appeared in court charged with multiple counts involving attempts to engage in sexual communication with a minor, grooming a young girl for sexual activity, and attempting to meet a child for sexual purposes.

According to court reports, the incident unfolded on Easter Monday this year, April 2, in the Massingham Park area of Taunton.

Owen was apprehended by a specialized paedophile hunting team operating under the UK database, a dedicated organization that works to catch online predators.

The team had set up a sting operation, where Owen had arranged to meet what he believed was a 14-year-old girl for sexual purposes.

The decoy was, in fact, an adult named Becca Simone, posing as a minor to trap predators.

During the online exchanges, Owen engaged in highly explicit and sexually charged conversations with the decoy.

He sent multiple images of himself, including close-up photographs of his genitalia, and groomed the decoy by coaching her on sexual activities.

The conversation was so explicit that it raised immediate concerns about Owen’s intentions.

When Owen arrived at the designated meeting point in his Land Rover, the team was already waiting.

They approached him, questioned him about his online activity, and subsequently arrested him.

The entire operation, including the arrest, took place within 15 hours of the initial sting, highlighting the efficiency and dedication of the law enforcement team involved.

Owen’s attitude during the proceedings was described as arrogant and obnoxious.

Despite his background as a former police officer, he denied any knowledge that talking sexually and sending explicit images to minors was illegal.

His denial did little to sway the court, which found him guilty of two charges out of three.

A trial was scheduled for December, but Owen pleaded guilty to two of the charges, leading to the case being expedited.

Interestingly, the case was brought forward without prior notification to the paedophile hunting team or the decoy, which resulted in Owen being sentenced for only one of the three charges.

The remaining two charges were allowed to remain on file, a decision that has sparked criticism from child protection advocates and the UK database organization.

Owen was spared a prison sentence and instead received a 12-month community order.

Additionally, he was placed on the sex offender register for five years and ordered to comply with a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.

Furthermore, Owen was subjected to a disclosure and barring scheme, which restricts his access to certain environments and activities, and he was ordered to pay court costs amounting to £665.

The UK database spokesperson expressed their disappointment that the court did not notify them of the case’s progression or sentencing, emphasizing their gratitude to Avon & Somerset police for their efforts in bringing Owen to justice.

They also criticized the leniency of the sentence, stating that it did not adequately reflect the severity of Owen’s actions and behavior, which they described as that of a dangerous and perverted sex offender.
