MICHAEL STOBBS FROM MIDDLESBROUGH ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE HOARDING THOUSANDS OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the local community of Middlesbrough, a man named Michael Stobbs, aged 47, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being found in possession of an extensive collection of indecent images depicting children.The incident came to light in April of the previous year when police executed a search at his residence, uncovering more than 10,000 illicit images and videos stored across various devices.
Stobbs, a married man and father, was charged with multiple offenses related to the possession and creation of indecent material involving minors.
The court heard that the images included both still photographs and videos, with 9,512 of these files located on a Dell laptop and an additional 507 on a Samsung mobile phone.
These findings revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior, with the material being hoarded and viewed by Stobbs in private.
During the hearing at Teesside Crown Court, the judge, Simon Bourne-Arton, QC, addressed Stobbs directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
The judge described the defendant as someone who had kept his 'dirty little secret' from his family, concealing his obsession with these repulsive images.
He pointed out that Stobbs’s viewing habits were driven by a perverted interest, which he viewed as a serious crime with real victims—children whose images he had been consuming for his own sexual gratification.
Judge Bourne-Arton stated, “You are aged 47, you are married with children, and you had a secret, a dirty little secret.
You were watching these foul images.
You did so for your own sexual gratification.
Your wife didn’t know about it, your children didn’t know about it.” The judge made it clear that such offenses are not victimless, as the children depicted in these images are real victims, and their exploitation is a grave matter.
Despite the severity of the charges, the court was informed that Stobbs posed “little risk” of turning his obsession into actual abuse of children.
His legal representative, Robert Mochrie, explained that his client had taken steps toward seeking online counseling to address his problematic behavior.
Mochrie described Stobbs’s hoarding of the images as stemming from a dysfunctional family environment, suggesting that his actions were part of a broader pattern of personal issues.
Ultimately, the court decided to impose a 16-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, coupled with supervision and a requirement for Stobbs to register as a sex offender for the next decade.
The judge emphasized the importance of treatment and rehabilitation, indicating that while the immediate risk of harm was deemed low, the behavior was nonetheless deeply troubling and deserving of serious consequences.
The case underscores the ongoing challenge of addressing online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable victims from further harm.
