MICHAEL PATERSON JAILED FOR STALKING AND THREATS IN HAWICK

A man responsible for a series of disturbing and threatening actions against his former partner has been sentenced to eight months in prison at Jedburgh Sheriff Court. The individual, identified as 39-year-old Michael Paterson from Howdenbank in Hawick, pleaded guilty to a range of serious offences that caused significant fear and distress to the woman involved.

According to court records, Paterson admitted to sending her abusive and threatening text messages, which contributed to her feeling unsafe and alarmed. These messages were part of a broader pattern of harassment that spanned several months. In addition to the text communications, he also made numerous threatening phone calls, further intensifying the victim’s distress.

The court also heard that Paterson took aggressive actions by visiting her home uninvited. On multiple occasions between June 2015 and July 2015, he entered her residence near Hawick without her permission. During these visits, he was reported to have shouted and used offensive language, behaving in a manner that was clearly aggressive and intimidating.

The victim eventually reported these incidents to the police, which led to further revelations about the extent of Paterson’s harassment. It was disclosed that he made a total of 49 phone calls to her home, many of which were threatening in nature. During her visit to the police station to report the matter, she also discovered that there were 20 missed calls on her mobile phone from Paterson, highlighting the persistent nature of his harassment.

In addition to the prison sentence, Sheriff Valerie Johnston imposed an 18-month non-harassment order against Paterson. This order is designed to prevent him from contacting or approaching the victim in the future, aiming to protect her from further distress and intimidation. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such cases are treated, especially when they involve repeated threats and invasive behavior in a community like Hawick.
