MICHAEL MCKAY'S HORRIFIC CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN LEEDS: BRAVE SURVIVOR SPEAKS OUT

In December 2022, a harrowing case unfolded in Leeds involving the heinous crimes committed by Michael McKay, a man with a disturbing history of child sexual offenses.

The victim, a woman who endured abuse as a young girl, summoned the courage to confront her abuser during his sentencing hearing, delivering a powerful and emotional statement that shed light on the devastating impact of his actions.

Michael McKay, aged 57 and residing on Ganners Walk in Bramley, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of indecent assault involving a girl under the age of 13.

The charges included four counts of indecent assault on at least three separate occasions and one count of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency.

His initial court appearance was at the magistrates' court, where he admitted to these charges.

Further, McKay was found guilty of two counts of unlawful intercourse with a girl under 13 during a trial held in October of the same year.

However, he did not attend the trial, having absconded beforehand, prompting West Yorkshire Police to issue a media appeal in an effort to locate him.

After a period of evasion, McKay was eventually apprehended and brought before Leeds Crown Court for sentencing proceedings on the following Friday.

During the court session, the victim, who had previously confided in her mother about her abuse at around 13 years old, bravely addressed the court.

She revealed that her disclosure did not lead to immediate justice, as she dropped out of education and found herself living on the streets before eventually returning home.

Her words conveyed a profound sense of loneliness and despair, stating, “I felt so alone.” She also shared the long-lasting psychological scars inflicted by McKay’s crimes, including her struggles with depression, nightmares, panic attacks, and difficulty trusting men.

She explained that she takes antidepressants and feels uncomfortable being touched without alcohol, describing her feelings of dirtiness and disgust.

The victim emphasized that her husband remains unaware of the depth of her trauma, which continues to affect her daily life.

In her statement, read aloud by prosecutor Brian Russell, she recounted having to write a letter to her employer to explain her past when she was being transferred to a department with male colleagues.

She described herself as now being “overprotective” of her children, forbidding them from sleeping out and restricting their activities, which has caused frustration among her children.

She admitted that her protective instincts have made her controlling, stemming from her own experiences of abuse.

The court was also informed that shortly after reporting McKay to the police, he contacted her via social media with a simple message: “Why?” She responded by explaining that she reported him because his actions were wrong and vile, and that she recognized he showed no remorse for what he had done.

The victim further recounted her feelings during the trial, describing herself as “petrified” while recalling the traumatic memories in a courtroom full of strangers.

She emphasized the emotional toll of having to remember every sordid detail of McKay’s abuse.

In a poignant part of her statement, she referenced the police appeal that sought public help in locating McKay after his conviction.

She expressed her conflicted feelings about the online comments, some of which wished him harm or suggested he should take his own life.

Despite her understandable anger, she stated she felt sorry for him and did not want him to die.

Instead, she wished that he would be haunted by “his very own monster”—regret—hoping it would eat away at him over time.

Prosecutor Russell highlighted that McKay had a disturbing criminal history, including previous convictions for child sex offenses against two other victims.

These offenses included indecent assault on a boy, gross indecency, ten counts of rape on a girl under 16, and buggery.

McKay was sentenced to nine years in prison for these crimes in 2004.

In sentencing, His Honour Judge Simon Batiste imposed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) on McKay and sentenced him to 19 years in prison.

The judge explained that McKay would be required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole, after which he would face an extended one-year license period upon release.

The court also addressed McKay’s failure to surrender, which resulted in additional sentencing considerations.

Judge Batiste emphasized the profound and lifelong impact of McKay’s actions on his victims, stating, “The consequences of this caused to the victim have been lifelong and extraordinarily profound.

Anyone would be incredibly moved by what she has said and the effects that these incidents have had on her.” The court’s decision reflects the severity of McKay’s crimes and the ongoing threat he poses to the community in Leeds.
