The tragic incident occurred in Northampton in 1976, when Ireland, dressed as the nursery rhyme character Little Red Riding Hood, approached Susan on her way to a friend's birthday party. The young girl was subjected to sexual abuse and sustained fatal injuries, including severe bites, before her body was discovered by her parents. The scene was particularly gruesome, as Ireland had attempted to set Susan's body on fire in a garage, an act that underscored the brutality of the crime.
