MICHAEL BRITTEN AND SHOCKING CHILD ABDUCTION IN SOUTHAMPTON AND ISLE OF WIGHT
A distressing case of child abduction and sexual misconduct has culminated in the imprisonment of Michael Britten, a 33-year-old chef from Southampton. The incident involved the unlawful detainment of a 15-year-old girl, which ultimately led to a police manhunt that extended to the Isle of Wight.
The troubling sequence of events began in August of the previous year when Britten abducted the young girl.
Court proceedings revealed that Britten, who was employed as a chef at Yates's pub in Southampton, had admitted to fleeing with the girl.
His actions, which court described as 'sexually motivated,' prompted a large-scale police investigation and search efforts.
Throughout the manhunt, the girl’s mother publicly appealed for her safe return, emphasizing the concern and distress caused by the disappearance.
The authorities traced the pair to the Isle of Wight, where they were eventually located.
Evidence revealed that Britten was seen on CCTV purchasing a ring from Cash Recycle in Newport on the Isle of Wight.
The footage also captured the girl and Britten sharing intimate moments, including a kiss, at a hotel in nearby Shanklin, where they spent the night together.
CCTV footage from the hotel showed the two of them close, with the girl resting her head on Britten’s shoulder, while another piece of footage from Cash Recycle showed Britten buying the ring which she was seen putting on her finger.
Further forensic evidence found semen on the girl’s underwear, although prosecutors could not conclusively determine how it was deposited.
During the court proceedings, Britten’s defence argued that the sexual activity between them was limited to kissing, and that no further sexual acts occurred.
Nevertheless, Judge Nicholas Rowland characterized the case as ‘sexually motivated,’ affirming that Britten’s actions demonstrated a concerning pattern of conduct.
The court heard that prior to these events, the girl had moved out of her family residence in July 2014 to stay with a friend of her mother.
Britten, meanwhile, was lodging at the same house.
The prosecution’s representative, Christopher Stopa, explained that Britten admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the girl, specifically kissing, which he justified as not involving semen but was still an illegal act.
He also admitted to possessing indecent images of the girl.
These admissions resulted in Britten being sentenced concurrently to multiple prison terms.
In total, Britten received a 15-month prison sentence for the abduction and sexual activity with a minor, alongside a 12-month sentence for possessing indecent images, with all sentences to run simultaneously.
The judge highlighted the troubling nature of Britten’s conduct, noting that a child as young as 15, who was described as troubled and vulnerable, was subjected to this ordeal.
As part of the court’s measures, Britten was also ordered to sign a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next ten years, which explicitly restricts him from being alone with any child under the age of 16.
The case underscores the serious legal consequences of such criminal behaviors and highlights the ongoing vulnerability of minors in similar situations.
