MARTIN THOMAS SHOCKS POOLE WITH BRUTAL ANIMAL ABUSE INCIDENT NEAR BOURNEMOUTH ROAD

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Poole, Martin Thomas, born on July 14, 1983, and residing at 186 Bournemouth Road, was caught on camera subjecting his helpless husky puppy to a savage assault. The incident unfolded outside the Tesco Express store located on Bournemouth Road, where witnesses reported seeing Thomas violently beating his eight-month-old dog.

At approximately 6 pm on Friday, February 12, 2001, local police officers responded to distress calls from concerned members of the public who had observed the distressing scene. Upon arriving at the location, officers quickly identified Thomas at his nearby residence. Due to the severity of the allegations and the evidence collected, authorities invoked powers under the Animal Welfare Act to seize the dog immediately. The animal was subsequently taken to a veterinary clinic for assessment.

Veterinary examinations confirmed that the dog had sustained bruising, although no life-threatening injuries were reported. The incident was further substantiated by CCTV footage obtained by the police, which clearly depicted Thomas repeatedly striking his puppy on the head. The footage also showed the animal urinating and defecating on the pavement outside the store, a sign of extreme distress and fear.

Following the investigation, Martin Thomas was formally interviewed and charged with offences related to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and neglecting the basic needs of his pet. He was scheduled to appear in court on Friday, April 16, but failed to attend the hearing. As a result, a warrant was issued for his arrest. The warrant was executed on Sunday, April 25, and Thomas appeared in court the following day to face the charges.

In sentencing, the court imposed a 12-month community order on Thomas. This included 200 hours of unpaid work and a 14-day rehabilitation activity requirement aimed at addressing behavioural issues. Additionally, Thomas was ordered to pay £1,300 in compensation to cover veterinary expenses and costs incurred by animal rescue organizations. A five-year ban on keeping any animals was also imposed, which will expire in April 2026. Furthermore, a deprivation order was issued for the dog, who is now eligible for rehoming, ensuring she will no longer be under Thomas’s care.

This case has once again highlighted the importance of animal welfare laws and the need for strict enforcement to prevent such cruelty from occurring in the future. The community of Poole and animal rights advocates continue to call for greater awareness and action to protect vulnerable animals from abuse.
