BRIDGWATER MAN MARTIN STREETER CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN WESTON-SUPER-MARE

In December 2017, a serious case involving allegations of child sexual abuse culminated in the conviction of Martin Streeter, a man residing in Bridgwater. The charges stemmed from a series of disturbing incidents that occurred in Weston-super-Mare, where Streeter was accused of abusing two young children, including a six-year-old boy and a girl under the age of 13.

Streeter, aged 58 at the time, faced a trial at Bristol Crown Court, where he vehemently denied all allegations. Despite his denials, a jury unanimously found him guilty of multiple heinous crimes. The verdict included convictions for two counts of rape and eleven charges of indecency involving the young girl. Additionally, he was found guilty of taking indecent photographs of her, along with a charge of physical abuse directed at the girl. The jury also convicted him of a physical abuse charge against the boy, further highlighting the severity of the crimes.

The court proceedings revealed the gravity of the offences, which had taken place in Weston-super-Mare, a seaside town known for its tourist attractions. The judge presiding over the case, Martin Picton, announced that the sentencing would be scheduled for later in the week at Bristol Magistrates’ Court. This decision was made because the Crown Court was not accessible for individuals with disabilities, emphasizing the importance of accommodating all defendants and victims in the justice process.

During the sentencing remarks, Judge Picton emphasized the seriousness of the crimes, stating, “It has to be a custodial sentence. These are absolutely awful crimes. You will need to go to prison, I’m afraid, and it will not be a short sentence.” The judge also expressed gratitude to the jury for their service and offered reassurance that counseling services, such as those provided by the Samaritans, were available for anyone affected by the case’s traumatic nature.

Following the court proceedings, Streeter chose not to make any comments. His conviction marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victims and underscores the ongoing efforts to combat child abuse in the region.
