December 2017 Man jailed for years of abuse in ‘modern day horror story’ has jail sentence cut Andrew Margetts who abused three children in a campaign of abuse in what was described as a ‘modern-day horror story’ has had his jail sentenced cut by five years. Andrew Margetts, 31, of Friarn Avenue, Bridgwater, was accused of starting the attacks on a toddler when he was just seven and continued offending against another boy and girl over a 15-year period. London’s Court of Appeal has ruled he will now only serve 20 years of the original sentenced handed to him at Taunton Crown Court in January. He stood trial accused of 23 charges, seven counts of rape, seven of indecent assault, three counts of false imprisonment, two of indecent assault, two counts of gross indecency, one sexual assault and one of engaging a child in sexual activity. He denied all the charges but a jury found him guilty and he was sent down for 25 years. Prosecutor Sean Brunton said at the time: “It has taken great courage for these three witnesses to come and give evidence here in court in front of the defendant. January 2017 Bridgwater paedophile guilty of 23 counts of sex abuse, rape and imprisonment A violent pervert who sexually abused three children hundreds of times over 10 years has been jailed for 25 years He was found guilty after a six day trial. Andrew Margetts, of Friarn Avenue, Bridgwater denied 23 different sexual offences, dated between 1995 and 2005, including indecent assault, sexual activity with a child, false imprisonment, rape and inciting a child to engage in sexual activities, but it took a jury just two and a half hours to find him guilty of all charges. His victims were two girls and a boy, who were aged between six and 11 at the time. The oldest victim was four years old when he started to abuse her, but was unable to reach the lock on his door. She told the court he first raped her when she was just five-years-old, and had progressed to hitting her, tying her up, biting her, blindfolding her and holding a knife to her throat to ensure her compliance. He then progressed to assaulting and raping a younger girl, and then moved on to a young boy His inexplicable decision to send a friend request on Facebook to one of his victims led to a furious exchange in which he apologised for abusing her when she was a girl, telling her ‘I was a fool’. Margetts was described in court as leaving his room only for food or to go to the bathroom. Magretts used his computer and console in order to force the male victim to comply with his sick demands. He went on to abuse him between the ages of six and 11. The court was told that he would urinate in bottles or ‘whatever came to hand’, leaving urine-filled plastic bottles strewn about the room. He was addicted to pornography and video games on consoles and his computer – but even these devices helped to serve his perverted desires. He would bribe the young boy by allowing him to play on his console in return for sexual abuse, and used the computer to carry out searches for adult material, with a preference for sites that depicted child abuse and incest. A police officer told the court his room had been in ‘a state’ when they arrived to arrest him, with Margetts sleeping on a mattress on the floor, surrounded by bottles of his own urine, filthy plates and clutter. Throughout the trial, Margetts displayed little emotion, but made furious notes as witnesses and his victims gave evidence against him.
