WELLS MAN MARTIN FREKE CAUGHT WITH OVER 10,000 CHILD PORNOGRAPHY FILES IN SHOCKING CONFESSION
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Wells, Martin John Freke, a 61-year-old former orchestra conductor, was revealed to have been in possession of an alarming quantity of illegal child exploitation material. The revelation came after Freke made a distressing phone call to a 999 emergency operator in December 2008, during which he confessed to possessing more than 10,000 images and videos depicting child pornography.According to court proceedings, Freke’s family discovered files on their home computer on December 1 of the previous year. These files were labeled with names that raised immediate concern, prompting his family to confront him. It was during this confrontation that Freke, overwhelmed by guilt, admitted his involvement in possessing such illicit material. The court heard that he had asked the 999 operator, “how can you be so nice to me?” in a plea that reflected his distress and remorse.
Following his confession, law enforcement officials swiftly intervened. Police officers seized two computers from Freke’s residence and another from his workplace, which was identified as the Mid Somerset Orchestra, where he served as a conductor. Additionally, a computer from his employment at the University of the West of England was also confiscated. Subsequent investigations confirmed that all three devices contained illegal content related to child exploitation.
During the police interview, Freke fully cooperated and admitted to the crimes. His actions led to his resignation from his position as conductor and director of music, effectively ending his professional career. The court was informed that the material he possessed was categorized into various severity levels, ranging from Category 1, the least serious, to Category 5, the most serious. In total, Freke was found to have 10,261 images and 218 videos of child pornography, a quantity that underscores the severity of his offenses.
Judge Graham Hume Jones addressed the court, expressing his regret that someone with Freke’s background and intelligence could be involved in such heinous activities. The judge sentenced Freke to eight months in prison, taking into account the 73 days he had already served in custody. Furthermore, Freke was issued a sex offenders prevention order and mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and potential risk to the community.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the importance of vigilance within communities to detect and report such disturbing activities.
