MARK PERRY FROM LEEDS SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENCES IN BRADFORD COURT
In June 2022, a former mathematics teacher from Leeds, Mark Perry, faced severe legal consequences after being convicted of serious child pornography offences.Perry, who previously taught at The Brooksbank School located in Elland, was employed there from September 1, 2018, until February 28, 2019.
His arrest on February 27, 2019, marked the beginning of a criminal investigation that uncovered disturbing evidence of his involvement in accessing and possessing indecent images of children.
Following a thorough police inquiry, Mark Perry was formally charged with three counts of making indecent photographs of children, a violation under Section 1(a) of the Protection of Children Act 1978.
The misconduct hearing revealed that Perry had pleaded guilty to these charges during a court session held at Bradford Magistrates Court on April 30, 2021.
Due to the gravity of the offences, the case was subsequently transferred to Bradford Crown Court for sentencing proceedings.
At the sentencing, the court imposed a nine-month prison sentence, which was suspended for a period of two years.
Additionally, Perry was mandated to participate in a 'Maps for Change' course aimed at rehabilitation, and he was required to complete up to 50 days of activity related to community rehabilitation programs.
Furthermore, he was ordered to undertake 120 hours of unpaid community service as part of his punishment.
In addition to these penalties, Perry was subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting his activities and contact to prevent further harm.
He was also placed on the Sex Offender Register for the same duration, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The misconduct report emphasized that Perry’s actions appeared to be deliberate, with no evidence suggesting he was acting under duress.
The court considered the remarks made by the sentencing judge, who highlighted the seriousness of the offences and Perry’s long-term engagement with such material.
Despite Perry’s guilty plea, the report acknowledged that he had no prior convictions, was generally considered to be of good character, and had dedicated much of his life to educating young people without previous complaints.
However, the panel noted with concern that Perry had been accessing child pornography for over a decade, from 2009 to 2019, without being caught earlier and without taking steps to cease his behaviour until his arrest.
The report further detailed that Perry had accessed a significant volume of indecent images, underscoring the severity of his actions.
The court’s sentence reflected this gravity, combining a suspended custodial term with community penalties, a decade-long Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and registration on the Sex Offender Register for ten years.
These measures aim to protect the public and prevent any potential reoffending by the convicted individual.
