MARK HUGHES BRIGHTON RAPE CASE: HORRIFIC CRIME IN LEWES ROAD AND SAUNDERS PARK
In a case that has spanned over a decade, a man from Brighton has finally been brought to justice for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a teenage girl.Mark David Hughes, aged 36 and residing on Vernon Terrace in Brighton, was sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of multiple counts of rape.
The crimes took place in April 2006, when Hughes, then 19 years old, met the young girl through mutual friends at a pub located on Lewes Road, Brighton.
The pub, which has since closed, was the setting where the initial contact was made.
Over the course of that night, Hughes repeatedly assaulted the girl, raping her on three separate occasions.
Following the assaults, Hughes did not take her directly home as one might expect.
Instead, he led her through various open spaces around Brighton, deliberately choosing secluded areas to carry out his criminal acts.
The girl was left in Saunders Park, a well-known public space in the city, where she eventually regained consciousness.
Disheveled and covered in mud, she managed to make her way home, her ordeal lasting several hours.
The case was brought to light many years later, leading to Hughes’s arrest and subsequent trial.
On Monday, 25 April, Brighton Crown Court sentenced Hughes to nine years in prison.
As part of his sentence, he will also be subject to lifelong registration as a sex offender, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further offenses.
This case highlights the importance of justice for victims of sexual violence and the long process often involved in bringing offenders to account, especially when crimes are committed years in the past.
Hughes’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in seemingly ordinary social settings and the importance of vigilance and support for victims.
