BRADFORD FIREMAN MALCOLM VICKERS BRANDED A MONSTER FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN

In March 1999, Malcolm Vickers, a former firefighter from Bradford, was publicly condemned after being convicted of heinous sex offences involving young children. His conviction marked a dark chapter in his career, which was once celebrated for its long and distinguished service within the West Yorkshire Fire Brigade.

Following his trial at Bradford Crown Court, Vickers was sentenced to 27 months in prison. Additionally, upon his release, he will be required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities due to the severity of his crimes.

Throughout the trial, the court heard that Vickers, aged 55, had served at Bradford Central Fire Station during the time he committed these offences. Despite his retirement from the fire service in December, his past service was often highlighted, with many describing him as a dedicated firefighter. However, this reputation was shattered as the details of his criminal conduct emerged.

Bradford Councillor Tony Niland, a member of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority, expressed his profound disappointment and outrage. He stated that Vickers had betrayed the trust placed in him and had tarnished the reputation of the entire fire brigade. Councillor Niland, a Labour representative for Wyke, voiced his disapproval of the length of the sentence, calling it a disgrace and vowing to lobby the fire authority to deny Vickers any future benefits from the fire service.

He further condemned Vickers as a “monster,” emphasizing that it was particularly appalling that he committed these crimes while serving as a firefighter, a role that involves public trust and community service. Niland added, “He’s put these kids through a double trauma—first by committing the offences, then by forcing them to testify in court. I will be making representations to the Fire Authority to see if anything can be done to prevent him from receiving any benefits. My sympathies go out to his young victims and their families.”

During the trial, witnesses, including a councillor and colleagues from the fire service, described Vickers as a conscientious individual and a father-figure to other firefighters. Little did they know that while he was serving as a fire officer, he was secretly hunting for young children to satisfy his sexual desires.

Judge Norman Jones QC acknowledged Vickers’ long career, stating he had no doubt that Vickers had performed “valiant tasks” for the public over nearly three decades. However, the judge also made it clear that Vickers’ criminal actions had irreparably damaged his reputation.

Vickers appeared impassive in the dock following the verdicts, while his defence barrister, Simon Lawler QC, expressed that the trial had brought him utter humiliation and a complete loss of reputation.

Vickers’ career began in Hull before he joined the West Yorkshire Fire Authority in the 1970s. He served as a union official from 1977 until the early 1980s and retired just last December.

Throughout the five-day trial, Vickers admitted to using prostitutes and teenage girls starting in 1990. However, it was towards the end of 1997 that his conduct took a darker turn, as he began to seek out young children for sexual gratification.

He was found guilty of three charges of indecency involving a nine-year-old boy and two nine-year-old girls, as well as indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl. Vickers also admitted to attempting to pervert the course of justice. He was acquitted of charges related to falsely imprisoning two nine-year-old girls.

Victims’ families, devastated by the crimes, spoke out for the first time during the court proceedings. Three families, whose children had fallen prey to Vickers, were present at Bradford Crown Court to hear the verdicts and expressed their relief and sorrow.

One incident from October 1997 was highlighted, where Vickers went to the aid of a nine-year-old boy who had become stuck in a tree in Bowling Cemetery while collecting conkers with his nine-year-old cousin. Instead of helping, Vickers dragged the children under a bush, showed them explicit magazines, and attempted to induce them to touch him indecently.

The boy’s family revealed that he still struggles to speak about what happened, and that he confided in a teacher only after a week had passed. They described how the incident has haunted him ever since. The family also criticized Vickers’ lack of remorse, noting that he dismissed the children’s accounts and called them liars during his testimony.

Another victim’s family recounted that in January 1998, Vickers took two nine-year-old girls to Bowling Cemetery again, where he showed them sex magazines. The mother of one girl described her daughter’s transformation from a bubbly child to someone now marked by fear and aggression. She sleeps with her mother because she fears Vickers might return.

The other family mentioned that colleagues had been raising money to send their daughter to Disney World, but the trauma inflicted by Vickers has overshadowed any joy. They criticized Vickers’ callousness, noting that he had the audacity to claim he had a “hell of a year” in court, ignoring the suffering of his young victims. They expressed regret that he did not plead guilty earlier, which might have spared the children further trauma.
