YEOVIL MAN LEONARD ROBINSON, ONE OF UK'S BIGGEST CHILD ABUSE IMAGE DOWNLOADERS, FACES COURT IN SOMERSET
In December 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Leonard Robinson, an 86-year-old resident of Yeovil, who was identified as one of the most prolific downloaders of child abuse material in the United Kingdom.Robinson’s arrest and subsequent court appearance shed light on the severity of his actions and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat such heinous crimes.
Robinson, who resides on Pattinson Close in Yeovil, appeared before Somerset Magistrates' Court, where he required assistance to enter and exit the courtroom, using a zimmer frame.
His frail condition did not diminish the gravity of the charges against him, which involved the possession and download of an enormous quantity of illegal images and videos.
Following intelligence received by police authorities, officers conducted a search at Robinson’s residence.
The investigation uncovered a staggering collection of illegal material, including tens of thousands of indecent images involving children and animals.
The police’s findings confirmed that Robinson was deeply involved in the distribution and possession of such material, prompting immediate action.
Robinson pleaded guilty to multiple charges, admitting that between January 1, 2016, and June 28, 2018, he had downloaded and stored a total of 8,362 indecent photographs of children classified as Category A, which denotes the most severe level of abuse.
In addition, he confessed to possessing 11,079 images categorized as Category B and 32,152 images in Category C, indicating a vast and disturbing collection of illegal content.
Furthermore, Robinson admitted to creating and possessing 38 extreme pornographic images depicting explicit and realistic acts involving animals, which were deemed grossly offensive, disgusting, and obscene.
These images portrayed sexual acts with animals in a manner that was both explicit and disturbing, adding to the severity of his offenses.
Prosecutor Suzie Butler outlined the details of the police investigation, revealing that on August 2 of the same year, authorities traced a computer using Robinson’s IP address that was actively downloading known child sex abuse images from various movie clips.
A warrant was issued to seize digital evidence from his home, leading to the discovery of a hard drive and multiple memory sticks.
These devices were subsequently analyzed, confirming the presence of illegal material.
Robinson was interviewed at Yeovil police station on September 5, during which he admitted to the offences.
His case was then brought before the court, and he was formally charged with multiple counts related to the possession and creation of child abuse images and extreme pornography.
Due to the extensive nature of the evidence and the scale of his activities, Robinson was described as one of the biggest active downloaders of child abuse material in the UK.
However, the magistrates declined to proceed with sentencing at that time, citing insufficient powers to impose an appropriate penalty.
The case was adjourned until January 18, when Robinson is scheduled to appear before a judge in Taunton for sentencing.
In the interim, a pre-sentence report will be prepared by the Probation Service to assist the court in determining an appropriate punishment.
Robinson was released on unconditional bail and ordered to sign the Sex Offender’s Register within three days of the court hearing.
The duration of his registration will be decided at his sentencing.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute individuals involved in the distribution and possession of illegal and exploitative material involving children and animals, emphasizing the seriousness with which such crimes are treated in the UK.
