KEVIN ATKINS FROM CAMBRIDGE AND ISLE OF WIGHT JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Cambridge and the Isle of Wight, Kevin Atkins, aged 53, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and creating indecent images of children. The incident came to light following a police raid on his residence in Long Reach Road, Cambridge, on September 30 of the previous year. At the time of the raid, Atkins was not at his home; instead, he was detained on the Isle of Wight, where authorities also recovered a laptop from him.

Further investigation revealed that Atkins had used his credit card to pay for access to US-based child pornography websites. This financial trail linked him to the American law enforcement operation known as Operation Ore, which aims to dismantle online child exploitation networks. The information obtained from his credit card transactions was subsequently shared with British police, leading to his arrest.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that Atkins had downloaded numerous indecent images depicting young children being sexually abused. The images included some classified at the most severe levels of the child pornography scale, with thirteen of them being particularly egregious. Additionally, Atkins had stored some of this material on a disc, which suggests an intent to keep or possibly share the content.

Atkins, who has been married for 32 years and is the father of two adult sons, has no prior criminal record. He pleaded guilty to 16 charges related to the creation of indecent photographs and three charges of possession, involving a total of 179 images. His defense argued that he had no sexual interest in children and that his actions were driven by curiosity, which escalated into viewing increasingly extreme material on the internet.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth, presiding over the case, described the sentencing as influenced by heartfelt references from Atkins’s wife and children, as well as a probation report. The judge expressed regret that someone of Atkins’s age and apparent good character could be involved in such offenses. However, he emphasized the seriousness of the crimes, stating, “It is a tragedy that a man of your age and good character should be before this court for offences such as these. You assembled these images — some of them video images — on a disc for your own sexual gratification. I cannot accept you have no sexual interest in children. Why else would you assemble these images in such a deliberate way?”

As part of his sentence, Atkins was sentenced to eight months in prison. Furthermore, he was ordered to serve a three-year extended license period, during which he must attend a sex offender treatment program upon release. The judge also mandated that Atkins register as a sex offender within 14 days of his release from incarceration.

Mark Shelley, representing Atkins, stated that after moving to Hastings following his arrest, Atkins had admitted that his curiosity about adult pornography had led him to explore more extreme content online. Shelley emphasized that it was the internet that facilitated Atkins’s access to such material and that he was deeply remorseful, recognizing the disgusting nature of his actions. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and the importance of legal measures to address such heinous crimes.
