KEITH BURGESS SHAMES SOUTHAMPTON POLICE WITH CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR TOWARD TEENS

In June 2017, a troubling case emerged involving a police officer from Hampshire who was ultimately sentenced to prison for misconduct related to his interactions with teenage girls.

The officer, identified as PC Keith Burgess, was convicted at Guildford Crown Court of two counts of misconduct in public office, stemming from inappropriate conduct and messaging towards two young females during the years 2014 and 2015.

At the time of the incidents, Burgess was serving as a neighbourhood officer in Southampton, Hampshire, a role that involves community engagement and maintaining public safety.

His actions, however, cast a shadow over the integrity of law enforcement in the area and raised serious concerns about abuse of authority.

The court proceedings revealed that Burgess engaged in what was described as “sexualised” communication with the two girls.

Despite the gravity of the allegations, the jury was instructed by the judge to find him not guilty of sending sexually explicit messages, as the evidence was deemed insufficient.

Additionally, he was acquitted of three counts of sexual assault, a child grooming offence, and two charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse images.

Nevertheless, Burgess was convicted of misconduct in relation to his behaviour towards the girls.

The court also cleared him of a further count of misconduct in public office.

As part of his sentencing, Burgess received a prison term of 30 months.

The court also ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £120 and issued a restraining order to prevent any contact with the two girls involved.

During the trial, it was established that Burgess was not guilty of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in her kitchen while her mother was present in the next room.

However, the jury found him guilty of misconduct concerning his conduct towards her.

Furthermore, he was found guilty of sending flirtatious messages to a 17-year-old girl and requesting photographs from her, actions that contributed to his conviction for misconduct.

This case has sparked significant concern within the Southampton community and among law enforcement officials, highlighting the importance of accountability and integrity within police ranks.

The sentencing underscores the serious consequences of misconduct, especially when committed by those sworn to uphold the law.
