JERSEY MAN KARL CARDY JAILED FOR 12 MONTHS OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In May 2011, a 33-year-old man from Jersey named Karl Andrew Peter Cardy was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The Royal Court heard that Cardy had downloaded 62 images and four videos related to such content. These images were rated on a scale from one to five, with five being the most severe; notably, 18 of the images he downloaded were classified as level four.

Cardy's arrest occurred in June of the previous year when his ex-partner provided police with a CD she believed contained indecent images of children, which she stated belonged to him. Following this, authorities seized one computer and two laptops from his residence, where the illegal images were discovered.

During police interviews, Cardy claimed he had an interest in children but denied any sexual intent. However, Crown Advocate Conrad Yates emphasized that curiosity does not justify downloading child exploitation material, noting that such acts perpetuate the ongoing abuse of children.

Deputy Bailiff William Bailhache, who sentenced Cardy, remarked on the severity of the images, stating that the children involved would be profoundly affected for their entire lives. He said, "At level four or five, the lives of those children who’ve been subjected to such conduct will have been blighted for their entire lifetime."

As part of his sentence, Cardy will remain on the sex offenders register for a minimum of five years.
