May 2014 Cumbria man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for sex offences including sexual activity with a child An “utterly depraved” West Cumbrian man, who sexually abused a schoolgirl, has been jailed for 12 years. Joseph Moody, of Scotch Street Whitehaven, had denied eight specimen charges of sexual activity with a child and two counts of abuse when the girl was seven. But a jury at Carlisle Crown Court found the 58-year-old guilty of all charges and of downloading more than 6,500 indecent images of children. Judge Paul Batty said the offences were an “appalling catalogue of abuse.” The court heard all the offences occurred in the Workington area up to 2013. Branding Moody, of Scotch Street, Whitehaven, an “utterly depraved” individual, Judge Batty also placed him on the sex offenders register for life. The judge has also issued an indefinite Sex Offender Prevention Order.
