AYRSHIRE BASKETBALL STAR JAILED FOR GLASS BOTTLE ATTACK AT HOTEL
A FORMER Ayrshire basketball star, Jordan McIlwraith, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after pleading guilty to brutally attacking his ex-partner at the Adamton Country House Hotel in Prestwick on December 1, 2022.The court heard that McIlwraith struck the victim with a glass bottle, inflicting permanent disfigurement, and also punched her multiple times in the head.
Additionally, he admitted to presenting an open razor blade during the attack, which caused severe injury.
McIlwraith, aged 31 and of Glencairn Street in Stevenston, also pleaded guilty to breaching a non-harassment order by repeatedly attempting to contact the woman between December 5, 2022, and April 24, 2023, from various locations including Kilmarnock, Barlinnie, Mauchline Road, and Glasgow.
During the sentencing hearing, McIlwraith, who previously represented Scotland in basketball, told the court he was 'doing so much better' and expressed remorse, claiming he was in temporary accommodation and wanted to return to sports.
However, Sheriff Colin Bissett rejected his excuses, stating, 'This has nothing to do with you playing for Scotland, you've pleaded guilty to this charge and you are wasting your time trying to tell me anything other than that.' The sheriff described the attack as prompted by an argument, where McIlwraith shouted at the victim, struck her with a bottle, punched her, and brandished a razor blade, showing no remorse and denying responsibility.
As a result, he was sentenced to 14 months of imprisonment and received a new non-harassment order forbidding contact with the victim for five years.
