JONATHAN BARCLAY AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES IN BRIGHTON

A man identified as Jonathan Barclay, residing in Chadborn Close, Brighton, has faced significant legal proceedings after being accused of serious child pornography offences.

Despite spending over three years on police bail without charge, he ultimately pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children.

The court sentenced him to a 24-month community order and mandated that he register as a sex offender for a period of five years.

Barclay’s case attracted considerable public attention, partly because of its lengthy legal process and the serious nature of the charges.

His arrest was initially made in October 2011, but due to a series of complex legal and technical issues, the authorities did not formally charge him until January of the following year.

Police officials described these issues as exceptional, citing the intricate nature of the case which contributed to the extended period before charges could be formally filed.

Chief Constable Giles York publicly referenced this case as an example supporting the argument that there should be no cap on the length of time a suspect can be held on police bail, emphasizing that some investigations are simply too complex to conclude swiftly.

The legal proceedings initially included other serious allegations, such as causing or inciting a minor aged between 13 and 17 to partake in pornography and refusing to provide a computer password when ordered to do so.

However, the court did not proceed with these additional charges, though they remain on file for future reference.

The case also garnered personal repercussions for Barclay’s estranged husband, William Underwood, who has since changed his name to Christopher Clayton.

Clayton expressed his shock about the charges after reading about them in The Argus newspaper in January.

He disclosed that Barclay, under the alias Jon Philips and as a co-founder of Brighton’s Showbizz events management company, had told him he was on bail but failed to specify the reasons for it.

The couple had married in April 2013 after meeting through an online dating service that Christmas but separated shortly thereafter.

Clayton, who now resides in London, stated that he was unaware of the severity of Barclay’s charges until he saw the news published.

Reflecting on his relationship, Clayton shared that he initially fell in love with Barclay, describing him as a “lovely guy” during times when their relationship was amicable.

However, upon learning about the allegations, he admitted feeling violated and expressed regret, stating that he now believes their entire marriage was based on a lie.

In related professional developments, Barclay was previously featured on the website of Brighton-based events management company Showbizz, based in Cheapside, where he was listed as a co-founder under the name Jon Philips.

The company’s spokesman clarified that Barclay no longer has any connection to the business.

In broader criminal justice policy news, Home Secretary Theresa May has announced plans to restrict the length of police bail for suspects.

Under the proposed changes, suspects could be held on bail for an initial period of 28 days, with extensions up to three months requiring supervisory approval from a superintendent.

Beyond this, any further extensions would need to be approved by a magistrate.

The reforms also include a presumption in favor of releasing suspects without bail during investigations, aiming to speed up processes and reduce unnecessary detention.

Meanwhile, Sussex Police Chief Constable Giles York has expressed concern about statutory time limits on bail, warning that rushing investigations could result in more cases failing at court and potentially jeopardizing the pursuit of justice.

He emphasized the importance of allowing complex investigations the necessary time to ensure thorough evidence collection and case preparation.
