JOHN WALTON FROM CARLISLE FACES SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION AFTER CHILD IMAGE OFFENSES
In October 2017, a man from Carlisle was legally required to register as a sex offender following his admission to serious charges involving the possession and download of indecent images of children.John Walton, aged 57 and residing on Newtown Road in Carlisle, appeared before Rickergate Magistrates' Court to face allegations related to his actions in August of the previous year.
During a brief hearing, Walton pleaded guilty to four separate charges.
These included three counts of downloading indecent images of children and one count of possessing such images.
The offences were committed over a span of four days, specifically from August 1 to August 4, 2016.
The court was informed that among the images involved, two were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse, while an additional 39 images fell into Category C, and six into Category B.
Prosecutor Pam Ward highlighted an aggravating factor during the proceedings, emphasizing that some of the images depicted very young children, which heightened the seriousness of the offences.
Given the gravity of the case, magistrates decided that the matter should be transferred to Carlisle Crown Court for sentencing, considering the severity of the crimes committed.
Walton was granted bail and is scheduled to appear at Carlisle Crown Court for his sentencing hearing on November 10.
Until then, he is required to register as a sex offender with Cumbria Police, a legal obligation following his guilty plea.
During the court appearance, Walton only responded to confirm his name and address, remaining silent on other matters.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts to address and penalize crimes involving the exploitation of children and the importance of monitoring offenders post-conviction.
