JOHN SMITH FROM COLNE CAUGHT IN CHILD SEX IMAGE SCANDAL AT BURNLEY CROWN COURT

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Colne, a retired accountant named John Smith, aged 68, faced serious allegations related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that Smith, a father of two and a grandfather, had accumulated a collection of nearly 400 illicit images, which ranged from less severe to the most serious category, level five. These images depicted children being subjected to sexual acts, including intercourse and sadomasochism, with victims of various ages being exploited.

The case came to light when police executed a search warrant at Smith’s residence in Wycollar View, Colne, on November 28 of the previous year. During the raid, Smith’s wife entered the room to find her husband in a state of distress, to which he reportedly responded, “They have come to arrest me for downloading indecent images, love. I have been very stupid.”

Following his arrest, Smith was charged with multiple offenses, including nine counts of making indecent images of a child and one count of distributing such images. Specifically, he was found to have shared three level one images via Yahoo Messenger. The court heard that the images showed children being forced into sexual acts, including intercourse and sadomasochism, highlighting the severity of the material involved.

Police seized Smith’s laptop, along with CDs and DVDs from his study, which were later examined by the high-tech crime unit. The investigation uncovered a total of 397 images, with 13 classified as level five, 116 as level four, 87 as level three, 25 as level two, and 153 as level one. Smith was questioned again in March of this year, during which he admitted to downloading the images. He explained that he first viewed child pornography approximately three years earlier, after retiring from his professional career.

During police interviews, Smith expressed deep remorse, stating he was “very ashamed” and wished to apologize. He described himself as “absolutely mortified” by the number of images he had accumulated. His legal representative, Tim Storrie, emphasized that Smith had led a previously blameless life and had immediately sought help upon his arrest, acknowledging the gravity of his actions and the harm caused.

Judge Simon Newell, presiding over the case, acknowledged Smith’s genuine remorse and insight into his misconduct. The judge highlighted the disturbing nature of the crimes, noting that children are often recruited and coerced into such activities to facilitate online viewing by offenders like Smith. While recognizing the need for a custodial sentence, Judge Newell decided to suspend the prison term, considering the possibility of effective treatment. Smith was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years, with an additional two years of supervision and participation in a sex offender treatment program. Furthermore, he was issued a sexual offences prevention order and registered as a sex offender for ten years. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the offenses, balanced with the potential for rehabilitation.
