JOHN O’BRIEN FROM LIVERPOOL ESCAPES JAIL AFTER BEING CAUGHT WITH CHILD AND ANIMAL ABUSE IMAGES
In a case that has shocked the local community of Liverpool, John O’Brien, a 63-year-old resident of West Derby, was found in possession of highly disturbing and illegal images depicting child abuse and bestiality.Despite the severity of the material discovered, O’Brien was not sentenced to prison but received a community order from Liverpool Crown Court.
On December 14, 2018, police officers executed a search warrant at O’Brien’s residence on Brigadier Drive in West Derby.
The raid was part of an investigation into the possession and distribution of indecent images.
When officers arrived just after midday, they found O’Brien present at the scene.
During the search, three laptops were seized, which contained a horrifying collection of illegal content.
Prosecutor Paul Blasbery detailed the nature of the material found on the devices.
The laptops contained images and videos classified as Category A, the most serious level, which included depictions of child rape involving girls aged between five and ten.
Additionally, there were Category B files showing abuse of boys as young as three or four, as well as girls as young as six.
The devices also held Category C images, which depicted girls aged ten to twelve.
Beyond the child abuse material, the laptops also stored 25 extreme pornographic images, including those involving bestiality with horses and dogs.
O’Brien was taken in for police questioning, during which he admitted to using peer-to-peer file-sharing programs to download the illicit content.
He acknowledged that he had viewed images involving children but claimed he did not actively seek out such material.
His defense highlighted his prior good character, noting his history of treating injured soldiers during the First Gulf War and his 25 years of employment with Liverpool City Council.
Despite the disturbing nature of the evidence, the court opted for a relatively lenient sentence.
Judge Smith imposed a two-year community order on O’Brien.
The order included a 35-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement aimed at addressing his behavior and a three-month home curfew from 8 pm to 8 am daily.
Furthermore, O’Brien was ordered to register as a sex offender and to adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next five years.
The judge warned that any breach of these conditions could result in a custodial sentence, emphasizing the seriousness of his offenses and the importance of ongoing supervision.
