JOHN MOONEY'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN SOUTHAMPTON: PAEDOPHILE ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ABUSE OF 8-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In January 2017, a disturbing case emerged from Southampton involving a retired lorry driver named John Christopher Moloney, who was accused of heinous sexual offenses against a young girl.Moloney, a resident of the Thornhill area in Southampton, appeared before Southampton Crown Court to face charges related to his grooming and sexual abuse of a child under the age of 13.
According to court proceedings, Moloney admitted to police that he believed he was in a genuine 'relationship' with the girl, who was only eight years old at the time.
The court heard that Moloney had handed himself in to authorities, confessing to grooming the girl over a period of three years, during which he engaged in sexual assault.
His actions began when the girl was just six years old, and over time, his conduct escalated into actual sexual activity.
Moloney's guilty plea meant that the young victim was spared the trauma of giving evidence in court.
Despite this, he showed no remorse for his actions and instead portrayed himself as the victim in the situation.
During police investigations, officers seized a computer and other internet-enabled devices from Moloney's residence.
These devices contained thousands of indecent images of children, spanning all three categories of severity, including the most serious Category A images, which depicted children being raped and sexually abused.
Further examination of his computer revealed that Moloney had been actively searching for and viewing such images both before and during the period of abuse against the young girl.
During police interviews, he openly stated that his sexual preference was for prepubescent female children.
In a victim impact statement presented to the court, the child's parents described the profound psychological and emotional toll the abuse had taken on her.
They explained that she was now struggling with sleep issues and that her childhood had been significantly affected.
The family was forced to relocate and change her school because Moloney continued to live nearby, causing ongoing distress and fear.
Despite the severity of his crimes, Moloney was sentenced to a total of 17 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended, allowing him to walk free from court.
As part of his sentencing, he was ordered to participate in a six-month rehabilitation program and was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of ten years.
Additionally, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was issued against him, also lasting ten years, to restrict his activities and protect the community from further harm.
