JOHN MCMURDO, PREDATORY PLYMOUTH SCOUT LEADER, SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In January 2010, a disturbing case unfolded involving John McMurdo, a 36-year-old former Scout leader from Plymouth, who was convicted of possessing and distributing child abuse images. The case revealed a troubling pattern of criminal behavior rooted in exploitation and deception.

McMurdo faced a series of serious charges at Plymouth Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to all 14 counts brought against him during a hearing the previous month. The charges included eleven counts of creating indecent images of children, categorized from level one to four, with level one representing the least severe form of such material and level five being the most egregious. Additionally, he was charged with possessing 30 indecent photographs of children intended for distribution, spanning levels one through four, between December 30, 2007, and August 8 of the previous year. Further allegations included distributing these indecent images to unknown recipients during the same period.

Another significant aspect of the case involved McMurdo’s refusal to cooperate with police inquiries regarding encrypted data on his computer. On September 2 of the previous year, authorities issued a disclosure notice demanding access to his encrypted devices. Despite providing two passwords, McMurdo’s attempts to unlock the discs proved unsuccessful. Police managed to obtain three additional passwords, two of which appeared to be random strings of letters and numbers, while the third was suspected to be a coded message. This third password was decrypted into a 'memorable message' that reportedly referenced the rape of a boy, adding a disturbing layer to the investigation.

Prosecutor Piers Norsworthy detailed the police operation, explaining that officers raided McMurdo’s flat on Lipson Road on August 7 of the previous year. During the raid, they seized several CDs, one of which was examined immediately and found to contain approximately 1,890 images depicting boys being abused. The following day, McMurdo was arrested at a Scout camp located in south-east Cornwall. When questioned about the encrypted discs, he refused to provide the passwords and declined to explain his reasons for withholding them.

In his police interview, McMurdo admitted to being a Scout leader for a year, stating that he joined the organization to expand his social network. However, he also confessed to having a disturbing sexual fantasy involving boys aged eight to ten, often dressed in football kits. He revealed that he frequented internet chatrooms and had been sharing illicit images with other individuals involved in similar criminal activities for several years.

Defense attorney Paul Bitmead acknowledged the severity of the crimes, describing them as “vile offenses.” He emphasized that McMurdo recognized he had a problem and expressed remorse, stating, “My client accepts that he has a problem and what he did was wrong and immoral.” Mr. Bitmead also indicated that McMurdo was willing to undertake rehabilitation courses while in prison and was committed to doing everything possible to prevent a recurrence of his offending behavior.

Judge Paul Darlow delivered a stern sentence, condemning McMurdo’s predatory and unnatural sexual interests. The judge highlighted that McMurdo’s role as a Scout leader was exploited to further his disturbing interests, including the possession and exchange of indecent images of children. Addressing the potential impact on victims, the judge remarked, “Maybe you do or don’t understand the misery of children subjected to abuse to satisfy your predatory interest.”

As a result, McMurdo was sentenced to a total of 40 months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of ten years and was subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, aimed at restricting his future conduct and safeguarding the community.

Following the sentencing, a representative from the Scout Association, Simon Carter, expressed their stance on the case, stating, “We are pleased John McMurdo pleaded guilty and has received a heavy sentence,” underscoring the organization’s commitment to addressing such serious breaches of trust and safety.
