JOHN JONES, THE SOUTHAMPTON PAEDOPHILE, DIES IN CUSTODY AT SOUTHAMPTON CROWN COURT

In a tragic and unsettling incident, John Jones, a convicted paedophile from Southampton, passed away while awaiting his release at Southampton Crown Court.

The inquest into his death revealed that Jones suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after being sentenced for a series of heinous crimes involving a 13-year-old boy.

The court heard that Jones, aged 76, had already served a year in prison and was scheduled to be released on licence on July 8 of the previous year.

However, he was found dead in the cells at the London Road court complex, just hours after his sentencing, while waiting to be transferred to a rehabilitation facility.

During the hearing at Southampton Coroner’s Court, Coroner Keith Wiseman described Jones as “not a well man,” highlighting concerns about his health.

Pathologist Dr.

Adnan al-Badri concurred with the coroner’s assessment, stating that Jones’s death “could have happened at any time, the day before or the day after.” The circumstances of his death raised questions about his health status, but it was ultimately determined to be due to natural causes.

Details of Jones’s crimes emerged during the proceedings.

The court was told that Jones, who had no fixed address at the time, had pleaded guilty to asking a 13-year-old boy to perform a series of indecent acts during December 2012.

He had lured the victim with cigarettes and alcohol, establishing a manipulative and predatory relationship.

On the day of his trial, Jones admitted to these offences, which included encouraging the boy to carry out sexual acts.

In addition to his one-year jail sentence, Jones was placed on licence for six months and registered as a sex offender.

Despite his health issues, security personnel took Jones back to the holding cells to determine whether he should be released directly from court or from prison, considering he still posed a security risk.

Throughout this period, security staff conducted frequent checks on him.

His health was assessed as being “variable,” according to Rob Del-Greco of the prison probation ombudsman’s office, who conducted an investigation.

Del-Greco noted that Jones appeared to be “right as rain” while in prison but was less communicative at court, suggesting he could choose when to speak.

The court concluded that Jones’s death was due to natural causes, with Coroner Wiseman remarking that Jones was “a man who didn’t help himself,” emphasizing the tragic nature of the case but affirming that it had been thoroughly investigated.

In a related case from July 2013, John Jones was sentenced to one year in jail for sexually abusing a teenage boy.

The court heard that Jones, then 76 and of no fixed address, had initially befriended the boy by offering him work cutting grass.

Over time, he gained the boy’s trust and provided cigarettes and alcohol, which he used to manipulate him.

During December of the previous year, Jones asked the boy to perform a series of indecent acts, including exposing himself, which was recorded on a mobile phone.

Jones pleaded guilty to causing a child to engage in sexual activity during his trial.

His defense attorney, Matthew Jewell, explained that Jones had not entered an earlier plea because he had not heard the recording until that moment and suffered from memory loss regarding the events.

Judge Peter Ralls QC condemned Jones for targeting his victim and described his actions as part of “a campaign to corrupt him.” Despite the one-year sentence, Jones was released immediately because he had been on remand since December.

He was also placed on licence for six months and registered as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
