JOHN JANNIKOS CAUGHT IN YEOVIL PAEDOPHILE TRAP BY ONLINE HUNTERS
In June 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving John Jannikos, a resident of Yeovil, who narrowly avoided imprisonment after being caught engaging in explicit online conversations with what he believed was a 10-year-old girl.Unbeknownst to him, the profile he was communicating with was a decoy set up by a vigilant paedophile hunter group aiming to expose predators.
Jannikos, aged 31 and living on Willow Road, had been in contact with the fake profile over several months, during which he engaged in increasingly inappropriate and sexualized exchanges.
He asked the decoy if she knew what a condom was, inquired about her sexual knowledge, and even suggested that she could sleep with him.
The conversations also included him offering to buy her leotards and swimwear, with him sending her photographs of pink and blue leotards, expressing his eagerness to see her wear them.
He also asked if she wanted to move in with him, and repeatedly expressed love and care for her, despite the obvious age gap.
At one point, he sent a message simply stating “Sex?” accompanied by a thumbs-up emoji, further indicating his intent.
The predator also requested her to try on the clothing he had ordered and to send him pictures, showing a disturbing level of premeditation and grooming behavior.
Members of the paedophile hunter group confronted Jannikos outside his home after gathering evidence of his online activities.
When they presented him with the evidence, police were called to his residence.
A search of his property revealed a number of incriminating items, including two leotards similar to those in the photographs, which were found to be stained with semen.
Officers also discovered a sex toy resembling a young girl, a mobile phone, and a laptop.
During questioning, Jannikos denied being the person behind the messages, despite the electronic evidence linking him to the online account.
He admitted that he had purchased the leotards from an online retailer, but claimed he was “so stupid” and expressed shame for his actions.
When asked about the stains on the clothing, he initially claimed they were semen, which was later confirmed by forensic analysis.
Prosecutor Suzie Butler described the case as one of internet grooming, emphasizing that the entire interaction was with a decoy profile created by the paedophile hunter group.
The conversations revealed Jannikos’s attempts to establish a relationship with the fictitious girl, including asking if she wanted to be his girlfriend and discussing sexual activities.
Following a trial at Somerset Magistrates Court in Yeovil, Jannikos was convicted of attempting to communicate with a person under 16 for sexual purposes between August 28 and September 25 of the previous year.
The court sentenced him to a three-year community order, which includes mandatory participation in a sex offenders’ program, a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and 150 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs of £775 and a victim surcharge of £85.
He will also remain on the Sex Offenders Register for the next four years.
Prosecutor Suzie Butler highlighted that the case involved internet grooming, with Jannikos believing he was speaking to a young girl.
The evidence was primarily gathered through the decoy profile, which was set up by a member of the paedophile hunter group.
When confronted, Jannikos appeared remorseful but maintained his innocence during police interviews, refusing to comment on the charges.
In a separate but related incident, another court hearing revealed that Jannikos had denied the allegations, claiming he was embarrassed and that his comments were misinterpreted.
Despite this, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him of attempting to obtain sexual gratification through online communication.
The magistrates ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders Register and considered imposing a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, with the final decision to be made at sentencing.
Throughout the proceedings, Jannikos was released on unconditional bail, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for June 21, where he could face a prison sentence if the case warrants.
The case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community groups in protecting vulnerable children from predators.
