JOHN HOOPER FROM EASTBOURNE JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN HISTORIC CASE

In a case that has spanned over a decade and a half, John Hooper, a 71-year-old resident of Eastbourne, has been sentenced to prison for the sexual abuse of an eight-year-old girl. The heinous acts took place between the years 2000 and 2001, when Hooper was living in or connected to the town of Maidstone, as well as other locations including Bridport, during the 1970s and 1980s.

Hooper's criminal conduct was uncovered after the victim, who had endured years of silent suffering, finally found the courage to come forward last year. Her decision to report the abuse marked a significant moment, highlighting her strength in confronting a traumatic past that had remained hidden for so long.

The court heard that Hooper, who resided on Upperton Gardens in Eastbourne, had established a relationship with the young girl through mutual acquaintances. Unbeknownst to her family and friends, he systematically exploited her in private, engaging in acts of sexual abuse for his own gratification. The details of the abuse, which occurred over a period of time, were revealed during the trial, leading to a conviction that reflects the severity of his crimes.

Detective Constable Jess Langlands emphasized the importance of the victim's bravery, stating, “It took great strength for the victim to come forward last year, even after all this time, she just felt she had to report to us for the first time the horrendous abuse she had suffered.”

As a result of his conviction, John Hooper has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, with an additional four years to be served on extended licence. He will be required to serve at least eight years before being eligible for parole or early release. Furthermore, Hooper will be registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

The investigation also suggests that Hooper's past connections to Bridport in the 1970s and 1980s may mean there are other victims who have yet to come forward.
