JET SHERIDON FROM BRIDGWATER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF STEP-DAUGHTER AND HALF-SISTER

In a significant case that has spanned over two decades, Jet Sheridon, a man from Bridgwater, has finally been brought to justice for a series of heinous sexual offenses. The victims, who displayed remarkable courage and resilience, came forward to report their experiences long after the crimes had occurred, highlighting the importance of perseverance in seeking justice.

Sheridon, aged 53 at the time of his sentencing, was found guilty of multiple serious charges following a trial at Taunton Crown Court. The court heard that Sheridon had committed acts of sexual abuse against his step-daughter when she was a child, as well as against his half-sister, Julie, when she was just 16 years old. These offenses took place over a period spanning from 1977 to 1986, a time during which the victims endured unimaginable suffering in silence.

The first victim, Karen, who was under 16 at the time, initially approached the police in 2009, more than two decades after the abuse began. Her decision to come forward was a pivotal moment in the case, encouraging her half-sister Julie to also speak out about her own experiences. Their bravery ultimately led to Sheridon's arrest and subsequent trial.

Following a thorough investigation and a detailed trial, the jury found Sheridon guilty of seven counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault. Additionally, he was convicted of one count of wilfully ill-treating Karen when she was under 16, a charge that underscores the severity of his misconduct.

As a result of these convictions, Sheridon has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Legal guidelines suggest that he is likely to serve approximately half of that sentence before being eligible for release on licence, subject to good behaviour and other conditions. The sentencing marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking out against abuse, regardless of how much time has passed.
