JASON MURTHA OF SUNDERLAND SENTENCED TO INDEFINITE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPE OF TWO YOUNG GIRLS IN APRIL 2007
In April 2007, Jason Murtha, aged 33, of Wear Street, Sunderland, was sentenced to an indefinite term in prison after being convicted of raping two schoolgirls who were both under 10 years old at the time of the assaults.
Murtha was found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court following a trial in which the victims bravely gave evidence to relive their traumatic experiences.
Throughout the proceedings, Murtha maintained his innocence, denying the charges.
Judge David Wood sentenced Murtha, stating that he would not be eligible for parole until he has served a minimum of seven and a half years.
The judge commented, "Frankly, there are no mitigating features in your case, but there are a number of aggravating ones.
The pre-sentence report describes you as high risk of causing serious harm to female children, and the sex offender treatment report places you at medium risk." The judge also confirmed that upon release, Murtha will be registered as a sex offender for life and will be permanently barred from working with children.
He emphasized that "you will not be automatically released at the conclusion of the seven-and-a-half-year period; it will be for the parole board to decide that."
