Febuary 2010 Paedophile was Roker Park kids’ train driver A FREED child-sex beast grins after landing a job — driving a kiddies’ train. Brian Stephens, 71, was taking thrilled toddlers for a spin when a shocked off-duty detective recognised him as being on the Sex Offenders Register for LIFE. The 71-year-old was jailed for five years in 2001 for attacking two schoolgirls who were both under the age of 14. The pervert was found to have spent six months giving rides to thousands of unsuspecting children — simply by hiding his vile past from volunteers running the attraction in a busy park. Last night his sickening antics were finally stopped — after cops took the convicted paedophile to court to ban him from going near the train in Roker Park, Sunderland. JPs in the city heard the warped pensioner had previously been jailed for five years for indecent assaults on two girls under 14. Sunderland Model Engineering Society — which operates the popular miniature train — admitted it never checked his record, but insisted youngsters were never at risk. Secretary Albert Stephenson said: “The club has a policy of no physical contact with any of our passengers. This is something we do in accordance with national guidelines.” He stressed: “This man is no longer a member of our club.” But parents using the park yesterday were outraged. One toddler’s mum aged 33 demanded: “How did someone with a past like his get the job in the first place There are supposed to be checks.” Police applied for a Sexual Offences Prevention Order after the eagle-eyed cop spotted Stephens. It bars the pervert indefinitely from parks, leisure centres, zoos and school playgrounds — and bans him from going near girls under 16.
