JAMIE SHARLOTTE LEEDS SEX PREDATOR SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR STREET ATTACKS
In a significant case that has sent shockwaves through the Leeds community, Jamie Sharlotte, a 25-year-old man, has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of two separate sexual assaults that took place on the streets of Leeds.The court proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior by Sharlotte, who was found guilty of attacking women in different parts of the city during 2016.
On the afternoon of April 25, 2016, a woman disembarked from a bus in the quiet area of Cross Gates.
As she made her way along a less populated street, she was followed by Sharlotte.
The jury was told that he then pulled her to the ground, placing his hand around her throat in an attempt to subdue her.
He also tried to remove her trousers, indicating an intent to commit a sexual assault.
However, the woman resisted fiercely, and Sharlotte fled the scene before completing his assault.
The second incident occurred in the early hours of October 26, 2016, in the Seacroft area.
As Sharlotte was walking to his job at Leeds Market, he followed a woman along York Road at around 3 a.m.
The court heard that he forced her to the ground and carried out a sexual assault.
Police investigations quickly identified Sharlotte as a suspect after CCTV footage captured him near the scene of the attack.
Further forensic evidence linked him to the crime; police recovered gloves from his residence that contained DNA from the second victim.
The DNA analysis revealed that the likelihood of the sample matching anyone else was one billion to one, solidifying his connection to the assault.
During the trial, the jury was presented with compelling evidence, and the court heard detailed testimonies about the attacks.
Judge Guy Kearl, QC, addressed the court during sentencing, emphasizing the seriousness of Sharlotte’s actions.
He stated, “The two offences of which you have been convicted demonstrate an emerging pattern of sexual offences over a six-month period.
Although each was relatively short-lived, given the location of each offence in a relatively secluded place and the fact that nobody was about…this discloses predatory behaviour.” In light of the evidence and the gravity of his crimes, Sharlotte was sentenced to a total of twelve years in prison.
The judge ordered that he serve an initial custodial period of seven and a half years, followed by an extended period of four and a half years on licence, ensuring he remains under supervision after his release.
This case highlights the ongoing concerns about street-based sexual predators in Leeds and underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness in preventing such heinous acts.
