JAMES STODDART SENTENCED IN MIDDLESBROUGH FOR ONLINE SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN

In June 2020, a serious case involving James Stoddart, a 38-year-old resident of Middlesbrough, came to light when he was convicted of engaging in explicit online conversations, believing he was communicating with minors.

The incident unfolded over a period of more than two years, during which Stoddart believed he was chatting with underage girls, but in reality, he was interacting with adults posing as children.

According to reports from Teesside Crown Court, the police were alerted after an adult, pretending to be a child online, raised concerns about the nature of the conversations.

Authorities swiftly responded by arresting Stoddart and seizing his electronic devices for forensic examination.

Prosecutor Harry Hadfield detailed that the investigation uncovered a series of disturbing exchanges where Stoddart discussed sexual acts and even suggested meeting up with the supposed minors.

During a court hearing, Stoddart appeared via a prison video link and attempted to distance himself from the allegations, stating, “I wouldn’t do that.

I don’t even go out of the house.

Never have for years and years.” Despite his claims, the evidence painted a troubling picture.

The investigation revealed that two of the conversations were with individuals pretending to be children, one a man and the other a woman, which further complicated the case.

Prosecutor Hadfield explained that the charges stemmed from online chats where Stoddart believed he was speaking to children under 16.

In one particularly serious incident, he sent an indecent image of a child to another user, which is classified as a grave legal offense.

Additionally, in a WhatsApp conversation, there was an indication that he might have sent a graphic image of himself.

Further examination of his devices uncovered 35 images depicting child abuse, which had been downloaded onto his tablet.

These images, along with the chat logs, formed the basis of the charges against him.

Stoddart admitted to ten charges, which spanned from December 2015 to March 2018.

These included six counts of attempted sexual communication with a child, three counts of making indecent images of children, and one count of distributing such images.

Stoddart, who resides at The Crescent, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, had no previous convictions related to these offenses.

Judge Howard Crowson addressed the court, emphasizing that while there was no evidence of actual contact with a real child, Stoddart genuinely believed he was communicating with minors during these interactions.

The judge stated, “I will have to deal with him on the basis that there was no evidence that he ever spoke to a child.

But he tried, and thought he was speaking to a child on every occasion.” In sentencing, Judge Crowson highlighted the severity of the offenses, noting that the act of taking and sharing indecent images constitutes a profound violation of the child's dignity.

He explained, “The taking of an image is a terrible violation of that child.

The violation is repeated with each viewing.

You’ve been ready to offer indecent images.” Regarding the chat conversations, the judge pointed out that in two instances, the individuals involved were confirmed to be adults.

For the remaining conversations, it was unclear whether any children were involved.

The court considered that Stoddart believed he was speaking to young girls inexperienced in sexual matters, but there was no definitive proof that any child was harmed during these exchanges.

Nonetheless, the court found that he was encouraging sexual activity and engaging in a level of planning to identify potential targets.

Stoddart was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Additionally, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that prohibits him from contacting or communicating with anyone under 18 and restricts his use of the internet and electronic devices.

He will also be registered as a sex offender indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities related to these offenses.
