JAMES HARCOURT AND HIS SHOCKING PAST IN DURHAM AND TEESSIDE

A convicted sex offender whose life was completely upended after his partner uncovered details of his criminal history is now serving a prison sentence following an anonymous tip to the NSPCC that identified a second victim.

James Harcourt’s troubling background dates back to 2003, when he was sentenced to a community rehabilitation order for engaging in sexual activity with an underage girl at the age of 19.

Despite this early conviction, Harcourt continued to pursue relationships with underage girls.

In particular, he was involved with a different underage girl; however, no formal police complaint was ever filed at that time.

It was not until the summer of 2016 that serious legal concerns resurfaced, when an anonymous phone call was made to the children's charity, raising alarm about what had transpired years earlier.

This information was subsequently brought before Teesside Crown Court.

Harcourt, who is now 35 years old, had a reputation for exhibiting violent and controlling behavior during his relationship with the teenager.

It was during this period that his partner discovered his previous conviction, which profoundly affected her trust and their relationship.

The relationship between Harcourt and the underage girl came to an abrupt end after he became jealous when she drew closer to another person, leading her to distance herself from him.

Following this breakup, Harcourt moved on and entered into a relationship with a woman in her forties.

However, her discovery of Harcourt’s past with the underage girl swiftly ended this relationship as well.

Prosecutor Richard Bennett explained to the court that the new partner was horrified and deeply disturbed by the revelations.

Harcourt's inability to facilitate supervised contact with his children since 2016 has resulted in him losing all connection with his offspring.

Due to his criminal history and the circumstances surrounding his relationships, he has also lost his home and his job.

Although he had maintained employment for some time, he has been unemployed since last December when he took sick leave.

His legal troubles and personal setbacks have left him with little to no stability.

During his court appearance, Harcourt did not attempt to deny or diminish his actions.

His lawyer, Dan Cordey, highlighted that Harcourt fully accepted responsibility and refused to make excuses.

The court heard that Harcourt was remorseful, acknowledging that his perspective on his past relationship was misguided and driven by a romanticized view that he now understands was wrong.

In the official probation report, it was noted that Harcourt, originally from Chandos Street in Darlington, recognized the seriousness of his offenses, expressing regret for his past behaviors.

He reflected on his life, stating that he had lived a relatively blameless life as an adult, establishing stable relationships with women, including one with whom he fathered children.

He emphasized that he had worked diligently for over a decade, providing for his family, until his circumstances changed.

Harcourt pleaded guilty to seven charges related to sexual activity with a child.

The court sentenced him to a substantial term of ten and a half years in prison.

Judge Sean Morris addressed Harcourt directly, noting that his prolonged delay in admitting guilt prolonged the pain for his victim.

The judge also underscored the devastating consequences of Harcourt’s actions, which have not only destroyed his personal life but also caused immense suffering to his children, who have been deprived of their father for an extended period.

In conclusion, the court’s decision reflects the gravity of Harcourt’s offense, emphasizing that such actions have far-reaching effects not just on him but on the innocent children involved and his entire family circle in Durham and the wider Teesside area.
