JOSE FERREIRA FROM CARLISLE AND DURHAM SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCE

In a case that drew significant attention at Carlisle Crown Court, 19-year-old Jose Ferreira faced justice for a serious sexual offence involving a minor. The incident, which allegedly took place over a two-year period in north west Cumbria, involved allegations that Ferreira engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of 13. Ferreira, who initially denied the charges, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. However, after a thorough trial, a jury found him guilty earlier this year, leading to his conviction on the serious charge.

Today, the court proceedings culminated in a sentencing hearing presided over by Judge Paul Batty QC. The judge took into account the background and circumstances of Ferreira, including evidence of his recent efforts to reform and improve his behavior. In light of this, Judge Batty decided to suspend the custodial sentence, which was originally set at two years, for a period of 24 months. This decision was made despite the gravity of the offence, reflecting the court’s consideration of Ferreira’s progress and potential for rehabilitation.

During the hearing, evidence was presented highlighting the positive developments Ferreira had made in recent months. The court also imposed a two-year supervision requirement, ensuring that Ferreira remains under monitoring and support during this period. Additionally, as part of his sentence, Ferreira, who was previously residing on Marks Avenue, Raffles in Carlisle, is now living at Hilda Close in Durham. He is also mandated to sign the sex offenders’ register for the next ten years, a legal requirement aimed at safeguarding the community and monitoring his conduct moving forward.
