MICHAEL WOODS DURHAM SEX OFFENDER FAILS TO UPDATE REGISTER IN DURHAM AND NEARBY TOWNS
In July 2014, a man named Michael Woods from Durham faced legal consequences after failing to comply with the requirements of the sex offenders register. Woods, who is 32 years old and resides on Fir Avenue in Durham, had previously been convicted of rape in 2005 and is subject to an indefinite registration order. The recent breach involved Woods neglecting to inform authorities that he had been living with his girlfriend and her two teenage children for a period of about a month.According to the court proceedings held in Newton Aycliffe, Woods failed to update the sex offenders register between January 16 and February 18 of that year. Prosecutor Joanne Hesse emphasized that Woods was required to notify police of his living arrangements, especially since he was spending multiple nights at his girlfriend’s residence located in Willington. Furthermore, he was obligated to inform authorities that two minors under the age of 18 were residing in the household, a requirement he did not fulfill.
In his defense, John Griffith, representing Woods, explained that his client had been compliant with the sex offenders register for the past six years and that the breaches were not intended to cause harm. Griffith pointed out that Woods’ former partner, from whom he has since separated, was aware of his criminal history. He also noted that no harm had resulted from Woods’ failure to update his details.
It was also highlighted during the hearing that Woods has made significant efforts to turn his life around. He is now free from drug dependency, has secured employment as a part-time chef at a fast food restaurant, and is actively working to rebuild relationships with his family members. Griffith described Woods as making “great progress in the community.”
In sentencing, magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with supervision, requiring Woods to adhere to certain conditions. Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £85 and a victim surcharge of £60. The court’s decision reflects a recognition of Woods’ efforts to reform, while also emphasizing the importance of compliance with legal obligations for sex offenders.
