JAMES DYER JAILED IN WOKINGHAM FOLLOWING SEX OFFENCES - THAMES VALLEY POLICE UPDATE
Following an investigation by Thames Valley Police, James Dyer, aged 37, of HMP Five Wells, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison at Reading Crown Court on July 9, 2024. Dyer, who was previously registered as a sex offender for life, pleaded guilty to multiple offences including engaging in sexual communication with a child, causing a child to view an image of sexual activity, and breaching his Sexual Harm Protection Order. The incidents came to light when, on February 28 last year, the victim's mother discovered Instagram messages of a sexual nature on her child's phone from Dyer. These included videos of himself with sexual content and voice notes of a sexual nature, sent between February 2 and February 20 of the previous year.
At the time, Dyer was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that prohibited him from communicating with anyone under 16, which he violated. He was arrested during a voluntary interview on September 8, 2022, while already in prison.
Additionally, on August 27, 2021, Dyer, then 34, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sending indecent videos to two teenage girls and attempting to persuade a woman to have sex with him by asking her to get out of her car. Thames Valley Police praised the victims’ bravery and courage, describing Dyer as a dangerous offender with an apparent obsession with young women and a lack of control.
Dyer’s crimes included sending videos of a sexual nature to two teenage girls and a woman in her 20s, as well as making grossly offensive comments in April 2021. On April 16, he attempted to drag a woman out of her parked car in Reading, asking her to have sex with him, but the victim managed to escape.
In addition to his prison sentence, Dyer was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will remain in effect for 10 years. Restraining orders have also been granted against him for the same period, protecting his victims.
Detective Constable Nicola Henderson, based at Reading Police Station, commented: "At the time of these offences, Dyer displayed all the hallmarks of a dangerous individual intent on sexual contact with young women and unable to control himself. He will serve a custodial sentence and be placed on the sex offenders register, which will enable supervision after his release to help safeguard the public."
She concluded by thanking the victims for their bravery and the community's support towards Thames Valley Police during the investigation.
