JEFFREY CARNEY PAMBERT HEATH AND WOKINGHAM SEX OFFENDER SENT TO PRISON

In a series of disturbing legal proceedings spanning over a decade, Jeffrey Carney, a man with a long history of sexual offenses against young boys, has finally been sentenced to serve time in prison. The revelations about his crimes, which took place in and around Pamber Heath and Wokingham, have shocked the local communities and prompted widespread condemnation.

Carney, aged 76, who resides on Burney Bit in Pamber Heath, Hampshire, has a criminal record that dates back to the 1970s. His most recent conviction involves the sexual abuse of two boys, one of whom was just 13 years old at the time of the assault in the 1970s, and another who was between nine and ten years old in 1988. The court was informed that Carney continued to abuse the younger boy until he reached the age of 15, demonstrating a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years.

During the proceedings at Reading Crown Court, it was revealed that Carney, who is currently battling terminal prostate cancer, was sentenced to 16 months in prison. This sentence followed a prior conviction in 2003, where he received a 15-month jail term for similar offenses. The court heard that Carney had met his younger victim while volunteering at a charity dedicated to helping disadvantaged children, which added a layer of betrayal given his position of trust.

Prosecutor Russell Pyne detailed how Carney, then the head teacher at Saint Sebastian’s School in Wokingham, invited the young boy to stay at his home over Christmas. During this visit, Carney shared a bed with the boy, and the sexual activity began almost immediately, according to court records. Six of the seven counts of indecent assault were linked to this particular victim. The remaining count involved the 13-year-old boy, whom Carney had assaulted while working as a teacher in Shinfield.

Defense attorney Andrew Storch argued that Carney had been a novice monk in the Anglican Franciscan Order until 1979 and expressed remorse for his past actions. He highlighted that Carney had written cards seeking forgiveness from the mother of the younger victim after she confronted him in 2007. The court was also told that Carney was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, and the side effects of hormone treatment had left him with no sexual drive, which the defense claimed was relevant to his current state.

Judge Grainger, presiding over the case, described Carney’s offenses as “extremely serious” and condemned his behavior as “appalling,” leading to the decision to incarcerate him. The judge emphasized the gravity of the crimes and the breach of trust involved, which had caused significant harm to the victims and their families.

Prior to this, in January 2014, Carney faced additional charges related to the abuse of young boys. He admitted to seven counts of indecent assault against boys aged around 10 and 11, with incidents dating from 1977 to 1992. These charges stemmed from allegations that he had abused boys during his tenure as deputy headteacher at Coley Park Primary School and as headteacher at Saint Sebastian’s School in Wokingham. The court had previously considered whether to impose a harsher sentence, but initially, Carney received a three-year community rehabilitation order and was ordered to participate in a sex offender treatment program.

However, in October 2003, Carney’s earlier leniency was challenged when the Court of Appeal intervened. The court deemed his sentence “unduly lenient” and ordered him to serve a 15-month prison term. This decision came after Carney, then aged 66, pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault against boys who were the sons of friends. The abuse had begun when he was serving as an altar boy at his church, where he was a member of the congregation, and continued over several years. The Court of Appeal’s ruling was influenced by the efforts of Marilyn Hawes, a mother of four, who campaigned tirelessly to have Carney’s sentence increased, describing his original punishment as too soft given the severity of his crimes.

In conclusion, Jeffrey Carney’s criminal history, which includes multiple convictions for sexual offenses against minors, has culminated in a prison sentence that reflects the seriousness of his actions. His case has drawn attention to the importance of justice for victims of sexual abuse and the need for stringent measures to prevent such crimes in the future.
