JAKE HANDLING'S HORRIFIC STALKING AND VIOLENCE IN DUNDEE LEADS TO PRISON SENTENCE

A disturbing case of persistent harassment and violent threats involving Jake Handling has culminated in his imprisonment after a series of alarming incidents in Dundee. The case highlights a pattern of troubling behavior that spanned over four years, beginning with a seemingly innocent encounter that escalated into a serious threat to the victim and her family.

Handling first came into contact with his then-15-year-old victim during the summer of 2019 while skateboarding at Dudhope Park in Dundee. At the time, he was 24 years old. What initially appeared to be a casual friendship quickly took a darker turn as Handling began sending her unsettling messages on Instagram, which made her increasingly uncomfortable. Despite her attempts to discourage his advances, Handling persisted, even suggesting he would wait until she was of legal age to pursue a relationship. This behavior was reported to have caused significant distress to the girl, who felt increasingly threatened by his persistent communication.

In 2020, the situation intensified when the girl, along with friends, was skating under the Tay Road Bridge. It was during this outing that Handling was confronted and chastised by her friends for making unwelcome advances. The court heard that Handling continued to bombard her with messages, which extended to her friends and family after she blocked him on all social media platforms. The harassment was relentless, causing ongoing fear and anxiety for the young girl.

Adding to the severity of his offenses, Handling's violent tendencies came to the forefront on October 25 of the previous year. On Mains Drive, he launched a brutal attack on his mother, verbally abusing her before physically threatening her with a knife. He seized her, forcing her into a chair while brandishing the weapon at her head and threatening to kill her, uttering the words, “I’m going to f*****g kill you.” His mother was left terrified for her life, fearing that she might be harmed or worse.

Following these events, Handling was taken into custody at Dundee Sheriff Court after failing to appear for his sentencing hearing. A mental health assessment was conducted, which deemed him fit to stand trial. In August 2023, he initially pleaded guilty to the charges of stalking the girl from June 2019 to April 2023, but this plea was later withdrawn after legal advice. Despite this, he ultimately admitted the charges in January of this year, against the advice of his legal representatives.

When asked by Sheriff David Hall whether he wished to pursue a community order or accept a custodial sentence, Handling indicated he did not want a community order and preferred jail time. Consequently, he was sentenced to a total of 10 months in prison, reflecting the seriousness of his actions and the impact on his victims.
