GRAHAM GOODCHILD SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL OFFENCES IN SOUTHAMPTON AND MERSEYSIDE
A man from Southampton, Graham Goodchild, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 25 years after being convicted of multiple historic sexual offences committed against four young boys in Merseyside.The case, which has garnered significant attention, highlights the disturbing abuse that took place decades ago and the ongoing efforts to bring justice to victims of such heinous crimes.
Goodchild, aged 82 and residing on Firtree Way in Southampton, maintained his innocence throughout the trial.
However, after a thorough legal process, he was found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court on June 11 of 17 counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted sexual assault.
The offences in question date back to the 1960s and early 1970s, a period during which Goodchild was employed as a Night Superintendent at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Merseyside.
The victims, all male children, endured their suffering in various locations, including parks, their own homes, and at Goodchild’s residence in Merseyside.
One of the assaults reportedly took place within the hospital premises, adding a layer of betrayal given Goodchild’s position of trust at the time.
The crimes spanned over several years, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior that has now been conclusively linked to Goodchild.
In addition to his prison sentence, Goodchild will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further offenses.
The investigation was led by Detective Constable Jason Banks, who expressed his condemnation of Goodchild’s actions.
Banks stated, “Goodchild is clearly a predator and used his position of trust to carry out appalling and despicable offences against young children.
The level of offending in this case and the acts he subjected his victims to were truly horrific.” He also extended his gratitude to the victims, acknowledging their bravery and resilience.
“I’d like to thank the victims for their immense courage and strength they’ve shown throughout this investigation.
This sentencing result has only been made possible thanks to their bravery,” Banks added.
Supporting the victims throughout the process was Jill Burnett, a specially trained officer who emphasized the importance of encouraging others to come forward.
Burnett said, “I hope this also encourages others who might have been subjected to instances of historical abuse to come forward because no time is a barrier to reporting offences.
They will get the support and advice they need to help them come to terms with their ordeal, and if they so wish, put their abuser before the courts.”
