A man from Southampton has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of ten years and three months after being convicted of serious child sex offences.George Gibbs, aged 55 and residing on Harefield Road in Southampton, faced Southampton Crown Court on Tuesday, 4 October, where his guilt was formally acknowledged for two counts of sexual assault against a child under the age of 13.
The criminal acts attributed to Gibbs involve two young girls and occurred over a period starting in July 2018.
The incidents remained unreported until September 27, 2020, when authorities were finally made aware of the allegations.
Following this initial report, a comprehensive investigation was conducted by specialist officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, who meticulously examined the circumstances surrounding the offences.
This thorough inquiry ultimately led to the arrest of George Gibbs and his subsequent formal charging with the crimes.
During the court proceedings for sentencing, Gibbs’s refusal to attend was noted, and the verdict was delivered in his absence.
The judge handed down a sentence of ten years and three months imprisonment, reflecting the gravity of the offences.
D/C Dawn Capper, a representative of the Child Abuse Investigation Team, publicly commented on Gibbs’s conduct and the impact on his victims.
She stated, “Gibbs continually denied the offences, forcing his young victims to relive these traumatic experiences in the trial.
To make matters worse, he refused to attend, with the verdict being reached in his absence.” She further criticized Gibbs’s lack of remorse and his apparent disdain for those he harmed, adding, “By doing so, Gibbs has shown complete disdain for his victims and not a shred of remorse.” Capper commended the bravery of the victims, noting, “In contrast to his cowardice, these two victims have demonstrated such bravery throughout the investigation, and I would like to commend them for their actions, which have made Southampton a safer place by removing a dangerous predator from the streets.” The officer urged others who might have experienced similar abuse or are aware of such crimes to come forward, emphasizing that authorities take reports very seriously.
She stressed the importance of support and justice for victims, encouraging anyone affected to seek help and report abuse, ensuring perpetrators like Gibbs are held accountable.
