GEORGE FRANCIS FROM SYDENHAM CONVICTED AGAIN OF SEXUAL ASSAULT IN CROYDON
In a significant development in a long-standing case, George Francis, a well-known community figure from Sydenham, has been found guilty once more of sexually assaulting a young girl.The conviction comes after a retrial at Croydon Crown Court, where the jury deliberated on two charges that had previously resulted in a hung jury.
George Francis, who has served as the chairman of the New Cross Fire Parents’ Committee for over 25 years, was initially convicted last year on three separate counts of sexual assault.
However, the case was not entirely closed, as he faced additional charges that required a new trial due to the jury's inability to reach a verdict on those specific allegations.
The latest proceedings took place on a Wednesday, during which the jury unanimously found Francis guilty of the two remaining charges.
The case originated from allegations made by an 11-year-old girl, who accused Francis of attempting to kiss her on multiple occasions and touching her inappropriately.
These accusations prompted police to arrest Francis at his residence on Kent House Road in Sydenham on September 30, 2005.
During the trial, Francis maintained his innocence, vehemently denying all allegations.
He claimed that one of the girls involved had demanded £50 from him, threatening to make false accusations if her demands were not met.
Despite his denials, the jury's verdict has now confirmed his guilt on the two charges, adding to the controversy surrounding his long-standing community involvement and the tragic history of the New Cross fire, which claimed the life of his son in 1981.
