In January 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving George Fisher, a married physical education teacher from Saltcoats, who was found guilty of engaging in a series of sexual acts with a teenage girl from Ayrshire. Fisher, aged 32 at the time, had established a close relationship with the girl, whom he had known since she was 12 years old through his hockey coaching activities. The relationship took a sinister turn after a school trip in May 2016, during which the girl texted Fisher to thank him for arranging the event. This marked the beginning of a pattern of increasingly intimate communication, with Fisher beginning to end his messages with kisses, signaling a shift towards a more personal and inappropriate connection.

Over the following months, their interactions intensified. Fisher suggested early morning meetings at the school, which the girl agreed to, under the pretense of attending extra hockey training. These clandestine meetings took place through a fire exit at the school, where they shared kisses and cuddles in the gym hall. As their relationship progressed, Fisher began signing his texts with affectionate terms, and he expressed love for the girl, further blurring the boundaries of appropriate teacher-student conduct.

Between July and August, Fisher visited the girl’s home two to three times a week, where they engaged in sexual activities, including intercourse. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was only 16 at the time, and the relationship was kept secret from her parents. Fisher’s actions culminated in him asking her if she wanted to have sex and whether it was her first time, to which she responded affirmatively. These encounters were described as occurring on multiple occasions over a six-week period.

The investigation into Fisher’s conduct was triggered when school staff became suspicious after noticing the girl arriving early at school. An internal inquiry was launched, and CCTV footage, along with security pass records, confirmed that Fisher had been entering the school outside of normal hours. The girl initially lied, claiming she was attending extra hockey training, but her story unraveled when her mother discovered her in Fisher’s car near her home. The mother promptly contacted the police, leading to Fisher’s arrest.

During police interviews, Fisher admitted to the illicit relationship and later pleaded guilty in court to a single charge of repeatedly having sex with a person under 18 while in a position of trust, in breach of Scottish law.
