GEORGE JOHNSON'S LEEDS SEX SCANDAL: TEACHER'S DECADES OF ABUSE AT WOODKIRK HIGH SCHOOL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Leeds, Geoffrey Johnson, a former geography teacher at Woodkirk High School, was sentenced to six years in prison for a series of sexual offenses committed over a span of two decades. The court heard that Johnson, aged 52 at the time of sentencing, had engaged in a pattern of grooming and abusing vulnerable teenage pupils, exploiting their trust and naivety for his own gratification.
Leeds Crown Court was informed that Johnson's misconduct began in 1968, shortly after he started working at the school as a 21-year-old graduate.
Over the years, he indecently assaulted five pupils, with the abuse stretching from 1968 to 1988.
The court detailed that Johnson had sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl inside a storeroom at Woodkirk High School, and also engaged in sexual activity with another 13-year-old girl in his car on the nearby moors.
The prosecution, led by Philip Standfast, revealed that the first known incident occurred in 1968 when Johnson fondled a 13-year-old pupil in a school storeroom.
This initial contact escalated into a more serious relationship, with Johnson having regular sexual encounters with the girl in his car on the moors.
It was this girl who eventually reported the abuse to the authorities earlier this year, bringing Johnson's actions to light.
Further allegations detailed that Johnson's misconduct extended to other pupils.
In 1970, he was involved with a 15-year-old student, and during that same period, he began an affair with a 13-year-old girl.
The pattern of abuse continued into the late 1970s and 1980s, with Johnson engaging in multiple relationships with pupils aged between 13 and 15.
Notably, he was found to have had regular sexual encounters with a girl in the school storeroom, a location he repeatedly used for his illicit activities.
The final known offense took place in 1988, when Johnson was caught kissing and cuddling a sixth-form student inside the same storeroom.
Throughout the proceedings, Johnson admitted to committing 15 indecent assaults.
Initially, he pleaded guilty to eight counts of rape and seven counts of indecent assault.
However, during the trial, he changed his plea to not guilty on the rape charges, which were subsequently reclassified as indecent assaults.
The presiding judge, Judge Brian Walsh, QC, did not hold back in condemning Johnson, describing him as a disgrace to his profession.
Johnson, who hails from Morley, Leeds, was ultimately sentenced to six years in prison for his crimes.
The case has left a lasting scar on the community and highlights the importance of vigilance and safeguarding in educational environments.
