GARY DAWSON'S SHOCKING CRIME IN MIDDLESBROUGH AND MARSKE: PAEDOPHILE'S SIX-YEAR SENTENCE
In a disturbing case that has left the community of Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas of Marske in shock, Gary Dawson, a man from Middlesbrough, was convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl.The incident, which took place over several years, has had profound and lasting effects on the victim and her family.
Back in February 2014, Dawson was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting the daughter of a woman he had met through an internet chat room.
The abuse reportedly began in Dawson's parents' caravan, a location where the young girl was subjected to repeated assaults.
The court heard that Dawson, aged 46 at the time, had initially denied the allegations, claiming that the girl had touched him first.
However, he later admitted to the charges, which included four counts of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13.
The court proceedings revealed that the first assault occurred in a caravan at Saltburn, where Dawson undressed the girl in the living room, covered her mouth with his finger, and committed the assault.
The victim confided that this abuse became a routine, and she was too frightened to tell her mother about what was happening.
It was only years later that she finally disclosed the abuse to her mother, leading to Dawson's arrest.
Following his arrest, Dawson did not surrender quietly.
Instead, he disappeared, leaving behind a suicide note.
His whereabouts remained unknown until police located him on a beach in Marske, east Cleveland.
Nigel Soppitt, representing Dawson, explained that Dawson had made a serious attempt to take his own life, which was considered a realistic effort given his state of mind at the time.
During the trial, Dawson was described as a lonely man who spent much of his life online.
His remorse was evident, as he accepted responsibility for his actions and expressed deep shame.
The court heard that Dawson was living on Broadwell Road in Middlesbrough at the time of his arrest.
The judge, Recorder Toby Hedworth, emphasized the long-term psychological damage caused by Dawson's abuse, not only to the young girl but also to her mother.
As part of his sentence, Dawson was ordered to serve six years in prison.
Additionally, he will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender for life.
The victim's mother, speaking to The Northern Echo, described Dawson as a “coward” and expressed her ongoing anger and bitterness.
She shared that her daughter now struggles with concentration and has been referred to a child psychologist.
Despite her brave front, the girl sometimes cries and becomes angry when recalling the trauma.
The mother also revealed that her daughter kept the abuse secret for years before finally revealing it.
She expressed her disdain for Dawson's attempt to end his life, stating that she believed he deserved to face justice publicly.
“I wanted him to face the court for who he is because that is the only way I would get justice for my daughter,” she said.
She concluded by saying, “I don’t think I will ever move on from this.
This is my baby girl.”
