GARY CURRAN FROM NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS SENTENCED TO 12 MONTHS FOR GROOMING AT EARLESTOWN RAILWAY STATION

In a case that has drawn significant attention to online safety and grooming, Gary Curran, a 55-year-old resident of Kershaw Way in Newton-le-Willows, was sentenced to a year in prison after being caught attempting to meet a minor for sexual activity. The incident unfolded in January 2018, when Curran was lured into a trap set by members of the group Hunting for Justice, who operate as 'paedophile hunters' aiming to expose individuals seeking to engage in illegal activities with minors.

Curran had initially made contact with a profile named 'Alex' on the dating application Oasis. The profile appeared to belong to a young girl, and after exchanging messages, Curran and the individual behind the profile swapped phone numbers. The conversation quickly took a sexual turn, with the individual claiming to be home schooled due to 'social care circumstances,' a detail intended to appear innocent but ultimately misleading.

According to prosecutor Paul Blasbery, the profile included a picture of a young-looking female, which was actually a photograph of a girl known to the person behind the profile, who had given their consent for its use. The messages exchanged between Curran and the profile were described as highly sexual and graphic in nature. Despite the explicit content, Curran did not seem deterred and expressed a desire to meet the girl in person.

It was agreed that the meeting would take place at Earlestown railway station on Saturday, January 20. On the day of the planned encounter, Curran was in a white van when the individual approached him, revealing his true identity as part of the 'Hunting for Justice' group. The man explained who he was, and Curran, upon realizing the situation, exited the van with his head in his hands, repeatedly apologizing. The police were called, and Curran was detained and subsequently arrested.

At Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on January 22, Curran pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a girl under 16 for sexual purposes, following grooming behavior. It was noted that Curran had a prior criminal record, with eight previous convictions unrelated to this case, including theft. During sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court, Judge Denis Watson QC addressed Curran directly, acknowledging that although Curran claimed to have been intoxicated at times, he was sober at Earlestown station. The judge also noted that while Curran’s previous convictions were for different offenses, they did not diminish the seriousness of this case.

Judge Watson emphasized that the incident was not completed because Curran was effectively deceived into believing he was meeting a minor. The starting point for sentencing was set at 18 months in prison, considering both aggravating and mitigating factors. However, due to Curran’s guilty plea, the sentence was reduced to 12 months, which the judge deemed appropriate given the circumstances. The judge also made it clear that a suspended sentence was not an option in this case, underscoring the gravity of attempting to engage with a minor for sexual purposes in the online environment.
